Tired Windows user needs help recovering deleted files, again.

Howdy! While staying up late waiting for someone to come home, I accidently deleted about 150gb of assorted media I thought I copied to another folder. I shut down the array when I realized what I had done.

I stupidly did the same thing a few months back. I think I got help from Discord since I didn't create any posts about deleted files. I was tired and panicky then, (and now too) and cannot remember the process I did to recover them then, except that it was 'complicated for a regular Windows user' (my quotes).

But I was able to see the latest files that were deleted and recover them. I don't think it took too long to do, and I'm sure it was free solution. I 'THINK' I recovered them in place and then started the array and saw the recovered files in Windows Explorer.

In my searches I found XFS Undelete from this post, XFS_Undelete , seems to be a better way to recover files. but I have no idea how to 'install Nerd Pack' and 'tcllib', which seems to be for advanced users, which i am definitely not one. One person I asked about this suggested I not try installing packages as a Linux novice.

Does anyone know of a method that I could use with detailed instructions? If needed I have a spare flashdrive and a spare external drive with plenty of free space on it.

Sorry if I'm in the wrong section, my 3rd rewrite before posting, thanks in advance!

Nerdpack is no longer supported, I would recommend asking for help in that thread, more likely to get help, you can also use a file recovery app like UFS explorer, but it's not free.

And it was replaced by NerdTools, which is also unsupported now.

But this featured post in the NerdTools thread might lead somewhere.

Thanks, I will look it up, though I have read differing things about how it is for advanced users, which I am definitely NOT one. If someone can get that working in Unraid (with an 'Unraid package'?) and post instructions for future novices, that would be great.

On a side note, Ugh. I was going to use the Recycle Bin in Unraid -> Settings a long time ago, but when I didn't see my shares show up in the 'Shares' section after turning it on and clicking apply, I thought I did not have my shares set up properly and turned it off.

I didn't realize that it only shows something in the 'Shares' section AFTER you have deleted something, not when just turning it on. I hope this bit of knowledge helps someone else coming from Windows who may miss that point.

It also only works for files deleted via an SMB connection. If you delete files from a terminal interface they won’t show up. Still worth having though IMHO.
