September 11, 200619 yr Looking for something cheap, and fast, and that doesn't stick miles out the back of the stacker. I'd also like to pick up 2, so I'd like one with enough speed to use with ReadyBoost under Vista. I see Office Depot has the Sandisk Cruzer Micro 2GB U3 enabled flash drive for $39.99 after $25 Rebate. Tom, will this U3 stuff cause Unraid any issues, or does it get wiped out during the install?
September 11, 200619 yr dschur, Presently outpost.com is showing the SanDisk 512MB Cruzer Micro (which Tom is recommending for the 3.0 upgrade) shop4.outpost.com/product/4088142?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG for $14.99 plus shipping. Everyone else seems to be selling it for $28.00-$35.00 plus shipping. Regards, TCIII
September 11, 200619 yr I see Office Depot has the Sandisk Cruzer Micro 2GB U3 enabled flash drive for $39.99 after $25 Rebate. I visited the syslinux page and it seemed to say it might not install on a partition that was bigger than 1Gig. { What Bugs are Still in SYSLINUX? } SYSLINUX is unsafe to use on any filesystem that extends past cylinder 1024. This is a fundamental limitation of the standard BIOS API. SYSLINUX will not work (and will refuse to install) on filesystems with a cluster size of more than 16K (typically means a filesystem of more than 1 GB.) If you purchase a 2gig flash drive you might need to format it in two partitions before you can make it bootable. I have no experience at this, only reporting on what I've read. Joe L.
September 11, 200619 yr dschur... I was worried about the same thing (the U3 software), so before I ordered a couple of those drives, I checked around. It seems a lot of people don't like the U3 stuff, so they made uninstall software available at www.u3.com/uninstall/. Chip
September 11, 200619 yr Well syslinux certainly will install on a Flash bigger than 1G - it just doesn't seem to work on the 2G Memorex I have Joe - I think this is might be the same issue we had a while back that "fix18" fixed in grub. Probably syslinux does not use lba mode to access the flash & this leads to the limitation. When I get some time I want to look at the source and see if this is the case, and perhaps fix it the same way grub does by forcing lba mode...

September 11, 200619 yr It's almost exactly the same form factor as the Lime Tech flash, just 3/8" longer. It also comes with some extra colored sleeves so you can color-code your servers.
September 11, 200619 yr Hi all, I just bought two of the SanDisk 512MB "Cruzer Micro" from outpost.com for $14.95 each plus shipping. I would have bought them at Fry's Electronics here in CA, but they do not stock them. Make sure that you do not get the SanDisk 512MB "Cruzer Micro" with the USB connector retractor/extender. It is $49.95 and is only a jazzed up version of the $14.95 version! Regards, TCIII
September 11, 200619 yr It's almost exactly the same form factor as the Lime Tech flash, just 3/8" longer. It also comes with some extra colored sleeves so you can color-code your servers. OK, fine, I just ordered 5 from Outpost. That's a great price on that drive anyway.
September 12, 200619 yr Author Stopped by my local Fry's on the way home (needed to get something else anyways). Did not have the Sandisk Cruzer in the store. I did pick up a cheapo Emprex 512MB drive for $29.99- $12 Instant rebat - $10 MIR For $7.99 it might be be a piece of junk, but I'll give it a shot. Vista says it does not have enough speed for ReadyBoost. On the opside, it has a sqaure aliminum case, with black plastic accents - A good match for the stacker.
September 12, 200619 yr Picked up 2 - Scandisk Cruzer Micro 1 gig Flash drives at Office Max for $ 24.95 each! I finished setting up the new software on it and it looks like its working just fine. Good Job Tom!
September 12, 200619 yr Author Avoid that Cheapo Emprex guys, looks like it has bogus vendor info. I'm going to pick up some of those 1GB SanDisk Cruzer's from Office Depot also. If anyone has any of those, and Vista, can you plug it in, test it, and see if it's fast enough for ReadyBoost?
September 12, 200619 yr Bear in mind you only really need 128MB, but that's hard to find. 256MB works fine as does 512MB.
September 12, 200619 yr Author Yeah, but the 1GB seems the better deal at Office Max right now for $25 vs $20 for the 512.
September 13, 200619 yr Author Well, I settled on the Sandisk Cruzer 256MB at Office Max $12.99 this week. Sounds like it shouls do the trick.
September 13, 200619 yr Author Well, el cheapo had a clearly bogus "Vendor", "GUID", and "Serial Number", while the SanDisk were entirely valid. My advice, to others, save the hassle, stick with SanDisk.
September 13, 200619 yr Did a pair of Sandisk 512s from Outpost. Noted that they do give you th eoption to change back to your preferred shipping on the very last page. I opted for the 2-day this time since it was only $2 more and I'd like to do this ASAP For those worried about the drive sticking out... Get a USB extension cable, plug it into the port, plug the drive into the cable, tuck cable inside the case. I stuck mine right through the floppy hole since it was open and right there. My system is fully loaded but instead of using trays I used 4into3 cages and I've got room for probably 3 or more drives if I wanted The 12CM fans are pretty quiet too IMO...
September 13, 200619 yr Author And just to confim, I tested and the SanDisk Cruzer does have enough speed for ReadyBoost under Vista. The el cheapo did not.
September 13, 200619 yr Hey Guys: NewEgg has Corsair 512 MB Sticks: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820233028 for $ 11.99 @ + 4.99/6.00 shiping (2). I emailed Corsair re: Codes and got this "snipet" : Quote: [li]Corsair is a member of the industry module design body, JEDEC, the Joint Electronic Device Engineering Council, which defines memory standards. In addition, Corsair is a member of these governing boards: Compact Flash Association, Secure Digital Association and USB Flash Drive Alliance. Quote: *CMFUSB2.0-2GB and CMFUSB2.0-4GB support 19MB/s read, 9MB/s write That includes all of the Flash Voyager products, but the results may varry depending on the make and model of your system and the size of the flash drive. Pretty cheep ( ) for name brand memory. I'll buy a couple and let you know. Dave
September 13, 200619 yr Erm.....what's the U3 stuff, and how did you get rid of it? U3 are some utils Sandisk puts on the flash key from the factory. If you follow Tom's instructions to do a quick format or the HP format it will wipe these files from the flash key.
