VM Windows 11 resume in console Locks Up

Featured Replies

Hello,

I'm running 7.12 with Windows 11 VMs with virtio-win-0.1.271-1 tools installed. I have the VM power management set to sleep after 15mins if no activity. When is try to resume the VM from the console, the CPU go to 100% and the machine locks up. The only way to fix this is to "Force Stop" the VM. I'd like to have the VMs pause and resume so looking for any advice to resolve this issue. Thanks.

Here's the diags. When I hibernate or pause from the console everything works as expected. When I select sleep inside Windows 11, and try to resume from the console, the VCPUs to to 100% and I can't remote (VNC or RDP) to the VM. The only fix is a Force Stop of the VM and reboot the VM.

Thanks.

Is Windows entering standby or hibernation? If the former, set it to hibernate.

Yes, Windows is set to sleep in 15mins..hibernation is turned off. I can try to set to hibernate.

Setting to hibernate in Windows has the same result. The VM vCPUs goes to 100% and locks up.

@SimonF any suggestions, I cannot reproduce, I can hibernate on Windows and still wakes up fine.

@JorgeB - Can you also select sleep in Windows 11 and wake the VM up from the Unraid console?

Will try some testing over the week, Normally only issues if passthru devices as some times cannot reset.

But cannot see any in the XML. Maybe likely to be a Windows issue.

My Win VM doesn't have a sleep option, and I think that's normal, how did you get it to show up?

Mine does, haven't done anything special. And it works fine too.

Interesting, it doesn't for me, are you using all the default option to create the VM?

Yes but it was made quite a while ago probably on 6.11 or 6.12, maybe defaults changed...

I see the sleep option now, for some reason the guest tools were not automatically installing the QXL driver, with the driver installed, I can sleep the VM, but see the same issue reported, it won't resume, it still resumes from hibernation without issues, so possibly some KVM/driver issue.

P.S. It works fine with a Wn10 VM, so it's something with KVM/drivers and Windows 11.

Running Q35 or i440fx?

It's the same for me, sleep doesn't resume with either on Windows 11

Win11, Q35-7.1 is what i have and it's working, old 7700K with no passthroughs (actually iGPU part through gvt-g, had forgotten about that).

I tried updating the virtio drivers in case it was an issue with the newer ones since I haven't since install, but it's still working.

24H2?

Yup

Unrelated but I just did an edit to the template (just remove the OS install iso) and it wouldn't start anymore with

Had to set Hyper-V to No. Was OK with it on Yes before.

Hello all,

Any updates on your testing? I've tried many combinations of VMs on 3 different Unraid servers with the same results (can't resume VM from sleep). I did not have this problem on versions of Unraid before 6.12.

Thanks

Last info I have is that it's being looked at by LT, use hibernate for now.

Thanks. I've tried hibernate with Windows 11 and the machines tries to wake up and locks up again. Can you share the VM configuration settings you are using in Uraid? Also what's power options/settings are you using in Windows?

Thanks.

VM was created with all default settings, only changes made was selecting 4 cores and changing RAM to 8GB, then just install the guest tools, power options were also left as default, just enabled the hibernate option that is disabled on Windows by default, then hibernate from the VM:

And can then resume from the Unraid GUI.

Thanks for sharing the instructions. Manually selecting that option worked on Windows 11. I'd hoped that setting would automatically hibernate (not sleep) after inactivity to bypass the sleep issue, but it's pausing the VM and locking up when I try to resume from the Unraid GUI.

I just created a Windows 11 VM with the 24H2 iso and I get this BUG. When the VM is resuming from sleep and the console locks up, no action, and I can only assume the VM is stalled because one CPU thread is maxed out. I deleted a previous Windows 11 install and made a fresh install, same issue.

Unraid v7.1.2

Windows 11 24H2

virtio-win-0.1.271-2.iso (guest tool)

Machine: Q35-7.1

BIOS: OVMF TPM or OVMF

Hyper-V: Yes

USB Controller: 2.0 EHCI
