September 11, 2025Sep 11 I have a Windows 11 VM running on my UnRaID. I have played with the resolution within the Windows VM. Currently have it set at 1920x1080 and it fits - width wise, but I have to use the vertical bar on the right to move it up and down to see the top and bottom task bar. If I go to 1024 x 768 the entire window fits, but of course it looks like a an old movie with the black bars on the right and left of a HDTV. Is there anything I can do or a feature Unraid has to make it fit to screen?
September 11, 2025Sep 11 Community Expert I assume you are using VNC? If yes, you can connect to the VM using Windows Remote Desktop.

I read the OP as running a VNC session on the server itself. Perhaps what is needed is to pass a GPU through to the VM so it can directly control the video output by-passing Unraid.
September 11, 2025Sep 11 Community Expert Right, but you can also get better control with Windows Remote Desktop vs VNC, if not using a GPU.

I personally use noMachine in preference to Remote Desktop.

September 11, 2025Sep 11 Author I am accessing the VM directly from UnRaid using the SPICE console. Right clicking on the actual VM in UnRaid.I followed this guide as I am totally new to the VM setup on UnRaidhttps://brianlam.ca/how-to-setup-an-unraid-windows-11-vm
September 11, 2025Sep 11 Community Expert This is a bit off the wall but what happens if you use a Quad HD (QHD) (2560x1440) monitor and then use 1920x1080 resolution for the Windows VM? These monitors are widely available at a rather reasonable cost.
September 12, 2025Sep 12 Community Expert I still think that passing the GPU through to the VM in such a case is likely to give a better experience. You then use the correct Windows drivers for the graphic card within the VM. Since then Windows is managing the graphics and since graphics and is not being emulated you get optimum graphics performance. You then run the Unraid console from a browser session within the VM, and quite likely have the VM set to autostart when Unraid starts. This is not an uncommon setup.
September 12, 2025Sep 12 Community Expert So you are running the VM after booting Unraid in GUI mode directly from the server? That's not really a good way, IMHO.
September 12, 2025Sep 12 Author I was launching the VM within Unraid, right-clicking on the VM, start with console (spice).Originally I had setup Windows 11 home VM so I could not RDP to it. Seeing that limitations, I redid the VM with Windows 11 pro. I can RDP to it and it looks good.Outside of RDP, is there another way besides what I am doing? Edited September 12, 2025Sep 12 by RaidPC
September 12, 2025Sep 12 Community Expert As has been mentioned a few times the best thing to do (if at all possible with your hardware) is to pass through your GPU to the VM and then run Unraid via a browser session within the VM.
September 12, 2025Sep 12 Author I think the problem is my lack of immediate knowledge on how to "pass through your GPU to the VM" not an unwillingness to do so. :-)
