[SOLVED] Intermittent Share Access Problem after upgrade new info

Featured Replies

Well I finally took the plunge and did the upgrade today, my first.  Amazingly simple.

1st item to note, the instructions say the first time you boot 5.0 the array should not be started and you have to do this manually after verifying there are no MBR errors.  Mine array was started, and everything was functioning fine with no errors.  I am certain I never had to start the array or change a setting to tell it to start the array automatically at start-up.  When I reboot, it is running though.

When I went to delete the 3 files inside the config folder, the two password files were there, but the shadow file didn't exist.  Since the instructions said "if present" I assumed to not have one of them was normal.

Now the real question.

I ran the New Permissions process, re-set up my users, and then added security to each user share.  Then rebooted both the server and my Win 7 machine.  I could access all the shares fine.  Then I went to copy over some files (in fact I was copying over some backups of my flash both before and after the upgrade).  What I am intermittently getting is the following popup error:

"You need permission to perform this action

You require permission from TODD-SVR\nobody to make changes to this folder"

Then it shows the folder name.

Then if I "try again" it seems to work.

This seems to be occurring with an overwrite or delete more than just a straight copy, but I think it did at least once when I copied an entire folder.

I see some have reported having to run New Permissions more than once so I just ran it again.  I ran it a 2nd time and it didn't solve anything.  I still have to repeatedly ask to delete.

Also when I rebooted both machines again, Some of my mapped drives to shares on my unRAID server, first return a not available error then the 2nd or 3rd time they work.  After I gain access once this behavior doesn't repeat.

My security settings for all my user shares are "Private" and the user I am logged into the Win7 machine with has read/write privileges.

I do still have unMenu 1.5 running, and the UPS addon, if you think anything in unmenu could be affecting user share permission I can remove and retry.

syslog attached if needed.

Secondary to this, once you run "New Permissions" is it possible to revert back to 4.7?

Yes, you can revert back to unRAID 4.7 even after you've run the new permissions script.

Thanks, other than my intermittent access noted above, everything else runs OK, I just don't know how problematic it will get.

New Info on this.

I think I am noticing my problem occurs when I access mapped drives that go one folder deep inside the main user share, but it does not seem to occur when I access the main user share.

It's hare to be certain because it is intermittent to begin with.  I'ts maybe every 2nd or 3rd try changing between one mapped drive and the other.

This happens to me also. When I try to delete some folders/files I get that error, and then have to keep hitting TRY AGAIN for it to work.

If this is always from a Win7 source, can one of you guys try going into Credentials Manager (in Control Panel) and remove any stored credentials you have for your servers?  (TODD-SVR and SUN by the looks).

Just a hunch.

I didn't have any credentials stored there for my unraid server. Since it is all public and shared. Anyone can log into a computer on my home network and access the server without a username/password.

Ahh well, was worth a shot ;)

I don't have any credentials set up either.

Opentoe - Do you notice the same condition I am, where you don't get this error when navigating direct to the User Share, but when you go to a drive mapped one folder inside the user share the error intermittently comes into play?

I use only a user shares. I don't even turn on SMB/NFS for disk shares.

Without change, this is happening less. I'll get a rare instance where the "try again" pops up on me.

Create a file in the 'config' directory on your flash called 'smb-extra.conf'.  Inside this file, put this line:

acl check permissions = No

Then Stop array and Start array.  Now let me know if this problem persists.

Attached is file you can just copy to 'config' folder on flash instead.

I am not using disk shares in this case either.  Let me explain it this way.

I have a user share titled "backup files" that has 4 or 5 sub folders inside it (all of these are folders that get backed up to an external hard drive, so that is how I have them separated on the server).

So I have my "P:" drive mapped direct to one of the folders under "backup files". IE it maps to <\\Todd-Svr\backup files\photos>.  This is a share that I intermittently get the permissions issue on.  However a drive mapped direct to <\\Toss-Svr\backup files> as far as I can tell never has any similar issues.  This pattern seems to hold true for any drive mapped direct to a lower tier folder such as "photos" but not direct to any user share.

OK, totally unexpected result I think.

I dont think this has anything to do with it, but there was an existing file by that name in the config folder.  I renamed it with the tag (old) and copied your file over.  Then stopped started the array.  That is all I did.

For some reason Disk 7 now says "resizing" under the "Free" column, and the array is still at the "starting" status (for 5 or 10 minutes now).

unMENU reports the array at a "started" status, while unRAID reports it as "starting"

The hard drive light is off, and unMENU reports no disk activity.

Disk shares 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 9 show up.  6, 7, & 8 do not.

None of the user shares show up.

I have attached the old smb-extra file and the syslog.

did you ADD it to the existing file or make a new file with only that line Tom said to add? the "copied your file over" sounds like the latter. Which I think would not be good.

if I'm following properly you should have

[global]
  security = USER
  guest account = nobody
  public = yes
  guest ok = yes
map to guest = bad user
  acl check permissions = No

in the smb-extra.conf file. Someone feel free to correct me?

OK, after waiting for a while, with no change in status, no disk activity, I tried to power down, which locked everything up.  no telnet or ip resopnse.  So reluctantly I killed it and rebooted.

Everything seems to have come back up normally, and automatically started a parity check with the correct errors box checked (I presume because of the unsafe shutdown).  I just ran a parity check a couple days ago before and after upgrading and everything checked out at the time so I think my integrity is good, so long as there is not a problem with drive 7.  Still to be safe I stopped the parity check, unchecked the fix errors box, and restarted.  I figured if it finds anything I want to know before it makes changes, just to be safe.

However, having fully come online on it's own I'm thinking the drive is OK.  The share is again visible and I can access the media on that drive fine. BTW I forgot I turned off disk shares for 6 and 8, so thats why they didnt show up.  7 however, for whatever reason really did not start along with all the user shares.

Now having been through all of that, the new smb-extra file did not help.  I still am getting the same errors.

So a few questions :

1. The obvious, any other ideas on my share issue.

2.  Is the line in my old smb-extra file important?  Do I need to add it to the new smb-extra file?

3. What caused the error in startup on the array, only important as I dont want to do it again, I dont like those types of shutdowns.

4. For future reference is there another way to shut down when things are locked up like that with a partially responsive server?  Is there a command I could have used after telnetting in?

5.  As noted above, ever since I upgraded the to 5.0, my array started up automiatcially (contrary to the instructions).  I never had to change any setting and even my first initial bootup of 5.0 self started the array.  Is that an issue?

Thanks again for any help!

No, I replaced the file and kept an old version of the file in case it was needed.  Things seem to be acting normally, but will play around a bit more.  I can merge the files as you suggest here if that is the right thing (going to slow down a bit and wait for any input to be sure).

I do use the guest account for a media player so it does need to function correctly.

However I really don't think the change in the smb-extra file caused my lockup.  If for no other reason than everything booted back up fine with the new file (that is still missing the old lines noted above).

Thoughts?

Yes, wait for someone else to comment.. but I think adding the line to the existing would be the right thing to do.

The guest account still works as is, so on standby to make any changes.

not sure if we are having the same issue. I was on 5.0rc2 and all was fine.

I built a new win7 machine on the weekend with all the same setup as before. I am not using homegroups in fact I removed the computer from it.

I have two other 4.7 version unraid servers  and a bunch myth/xbmc boxes and also a few XP machines on the network. The only machine that win7 asked for a password for was the 5.0rc2 server.  I entered root the first time by mistake I quickly flushed that and entered the admin user I had setup on the server it connected. I could asscess and delete files but no other machine on the network could nor could xbmc find any new movies and ember media manager on that win7 machine would not find any new movies to scrape when added.

I tried net use * /delete, flushdns, registerdns etc etc... no luck with anything.  I also tried the smb-extra.conf file idea but that did not work for me.

I booted up the previosue win7 machine and all was fine NO credentials stored for the rc2 server no password required ember worked.

So I flushed dns again. deleted all credentials on the new win7 machine, shutdown the server and rolled back to 5b14 for the time being, started the server then booted the new win7 machine and still it asked for a password to connect to the 5b14 loaded server I entered nobody without a password.  win7 accepted that fine, I could open and access files on all machines. Ember was finding and scraping new movies again and xbmc was properly updating the library. I did not have to run new permissions.

I am still confused as to why I had to enter a password on this new win7 computer for the only machine 5RC2 server. When I have never had to in the past. When I did try and use my admin account from the server it was changing the persmission on the files I copied over the server to mediaserver/myuser instead of mediaserver/nobody as all the rest of the files on the server are. I will give it a day or two and a few movies to make sure all is stable and will update to rc2 again or rc3 at that point.

Dave

Create a file in the 'config' directory on your flash called 'smb-extra.conf'.  Inside this file, put this line:

acl check permissions = No

Then Stop array and Start array.  Now let me know if this problem persists.

Attached is file you can just copy to 'config' folder on flash instead.

I'll do this. It certainly sounds logical. Getting better.
