@James Miller did you just use the config settings posted above? I have a mini with this issue too.

Hi,

Yep, I used the boot loader and config provided above. It worked first time, so I’ve not tweaked or adjusted anything yet as it worked first try.

J

thanks @James Miller

I can confirm that the limine BOOTX64.EFI file and the above config settings fixed this issue for my 2012 Mac mini.

I did have the issue that I could not start the array, as Unraid said I was missing a cache pool. I did not have a pool before, but there was an empty reference to one. I deleted it and then all was well.

Does anyone know if this workaround will likely break in a future update? Or is it something that might get added to the official release?

I'm making the assumption and hoping the next major update will include an updated boot loader which may address this. This is very much a workaround, and in a future update the bootx64.efi will likely get overwritten.

It should keep working after updating the OS.

AFAIK 7.3 will have the same bootloader as 7.2, but if you just update using the GUI, it will keep the Limine one, i.e., you would only need to install it again if you recreate the flash drive from scratch.

Can anyone confirm if this has been fixed for 7.3 stable?

I did it carefully over the past week. I first upgraded a test environment to 7.3. It was a Mac Mini. It upgraded okay (modified boot loader in place), and I then switched to internal boot, which is using a newer / different boot loader. It all worked.

I then upgraded my main Mac Mini (with all the Thunderbolt enclosures attached). Switched across to internal boot, and it’s been working for about a week using internal boot.

Seems to be working in 7.3.

You can use the Limine boot with 7.3 if booting from a flash drive, if you use an internal boot pool, you can use the stock Unraid bootloader (since it uses a different one with internal boot)

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately I was still getting the kernel panic after updating with the stock bootloader, even after an attempt at a manual upgrade. I gave up and switched to Limine and it worked perfectly from there.

Yes, as mentioned, you will need to use the Limine bootloader if you are booting from a flash drive, can use the stock one if booting from an internal boot pool, since that will use the Grub bootloader instead.
