//Tower not working

Featured Replies

I have just finished building my first Unraid server  :)

I am currently running through the configuration tutorial found here: http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Configuration_Tutorial

I have found that I am unable to access the server using //tower but it does work when using the IP address. This is not a massive issue but it is annoying when using Unmenu as it always tries to use //tower when navigating through it. Anyone got any ideas why this might be happening?

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried \\tower instead of //tower ?

I just tried that and it did not work...

Which browser are you using?

I usually just type tower [RETURN] in the bar. Internet Explorer completes this to: http://tower/

I have tried it in both Firefox and chrome and it always times out. It will only work if I manually put in the IP address.

I have not set a workgroup I just assumed that would happen automatically by being on the same router. How do I set the workgroup on the Unraid system?

OK I think I have found the info I needed from the wiki. Will give it a go once these drives have finished pre-clearing...

I had the same problem, when I installed unraid for the first time 2 weeks ago, being a network guy, I figured that it was trying to resolve it on the internet and coming back empty handed, so I went into my windows box "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc" and edited my "hosts" file so that it resolves "tower" to the ip address that my router gave my unraid box, its really very simple just add the following line at the bottom of your hosts file "192.168.1.15 tower" without the quotes of course. 192.168.1.15 is the ip address that my router gave the unraid box.

There is a slight trick to being able to edit the "hosts' file if you are using Windows 7 and I think Vista as well, when you open the hosts file with notepad and you try to edit the file, when you try to save it will tell you access denied or something, so what you do is go to your start menu and find notepad and right click the icon and click "run as adminstrator" and from within notepad click "File" then "Open" and browse to "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc" there is a chance that when you go there using notepad it might show up empty but just type hosts and it will open it up for you, if when you browse to "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc" you see an empty folder it just means the files are set to hidden it doesnt mean they are not there. Add the line mentioned earlier and reboot,

now when you use any browser it will resolve "tower" and "tower:8080" if you have unmenu installed to the correct ip address, hope that helps, cheers

... 192.168.1.15 is the ip address that my router gave the unraid box.

I would recommend a static IP for the unRAID server as it makes troubleshooting easier but it is up to you how you want to setup your network and it isn't a necessity. You can set the IP and workgroup by opening \\tower\flash\config\network.cfg with a text editor and changing the following settings, the settings below are just an example:

USE_DHCP=no

IPADDR=192.168.1.15

NETMASK=255.255.255.0

GATEWAY=192.168.1.1

DNS_SERVER1=192.168.1.1

Just as another safeguard it might be worth setting your router's DHCP allocation to range from something like 192.168.1.20 - 192.168.1.40 (allowing for how ever many devices you might expect would need to be assigned an IP on your network, with some allowance for phones, tablets etc). This way you can set any static IPs you want between 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.19, assuming your router is 192.168.1.1
