power outage, unclean power down

I would like to see unRaid become more stable and autonomous through power outages. Currently, when ever I have a brown out, or power outage (I don't have a UPS), the server gets an unclean power down. The shares are gone, and things are all screwed up until I finally restart it manually.

I'd like for the unRaid server to be able to lose power, regain power, and come back up to it's normal start up state. I suppose until then, I'll look into a UPS.

No, not neutral. Strawberries. Also, I doubt those really do anything other than reduce your bank balance.

But really, invest in a UPS. There is no computer system that likes to deal with a dirty shutdown. A decent one costs about the same as a typical 2 TB data disk these days. That's not much to pay for a little peace of mind.

This does occur if you have the BIOS set to power on in the last-state.  (in other words, to power up automatically if power fails)

It will perform a parity check, but, it does automatically come back online.  (or at least my two servers work that way)  It will do a parity check, and it might take as long as 20 or 30 minutes (or more for 3TB drives) to replay transactions in the file systems before they are made available once more.

That will never happen, when there are files open and written to and power is been cut at that time you risk loss of data. Or the filesystem in an unclean state. You can allow a server to stop the array and cleanly powerdown by letting it run on another power-source (batteries par example). Such a device is called a:

UPS

Joe I saw an older post you'd made with a UPS plug in: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=1528.msg16563#msg16563

So, ideally, I get a UPS, install that plug-in, and let it shut itself down before the UPS craps out of power as well.

I currently run tranmission. It's installed via Pkg Manager and uMenu. The only way to get the server to actually power down, is to use the umenu> User Scrips and kill transmission. Otherwise, it just sits there trying to shut down.

Hmmm, looks like transmission is still only available via the umenu system

rather than the newer pkg plug-ins.

No offense, but if you have a data server and don't have a UPS connected to it, you are doing it wrong. Very wrong.

My 900W UPS cost $150, I ended up buying 5 of them for different devices. One protects my 22 drive server. Even with all drives spun up, I get 35 minutes of battery life, and I can't remember the last time we lost power for over 35 minutes. Normally 90% of drives are spun down, and I get over an hour of battery life then. They have saved me many headaches over the years, I believe these UPS are now going for $220 or so, I grabbed 5 when they were on sale.

I honestly could not live without them. One of my best purchases, and trust me, when I was buying them I felt like I was wasting tons of money. Just buy one, you will not regret it.

apcupsd will call the powerdown script (also in unmenu) to shutdown. powerdown should terminate transmission.
