best procedure to move to new hardware (X15)

Featured Replies

I've put down a deposit for one of the new unraid X15 servers and am researching the process to move everything to the new server. I plan to just swap in all my HDDs to the new server using the same config so presumably that'll take care of moving the stored data but I'm wondering how to migrate everything else (shares, dockers, plugins, etc)? I'm guessing this would be accomplished by syncing the boot drives, caches and iso's but not sure how to do this? Maybe @SpaceInvaderOne has a youtube video for this?

If you are going to use the same storage, you then just need to copy the config folder from the flash drive to the new internal boot pool, except for the key file.

Is it alright to transfer the config folder via SMB? Not sure if that will cause permissions issues.

There is no problem. The config folder is on a FAT32 file system so does not support anything unusual in terms of Linux permissions in the first place.

What about all the system files on cache (appdata, docker img, etc). Would it be better to just move the m.2 nvme drive that currently contains my cache to the new X15 and add it as a cache pool or can I transfer these via SMB also?

Appdata should not be moved over SMB, either transfer the drive or make a local copy, docker image can be recreated (or also copied locally)

So best to install the current m.2 drive in a spare slot in the X15. Mount with UD. Then use the built in file browser to copy these files to the new cache drive?

Also, when I copy over /config what will the destination be? Not sure if internal boot is using the same file structure?

It's the same, it's still under /boot

Just occurred to me that I need to transfer /config without changing the ethernet port configuration already set in the new X15. Which files should I not transfer?

The network.cfg type files

I can rename the X15’s existing files to something like name.old.cfg just to avoid overwriting right? As a just in case situation.

Looks like transferring the old /config via SMB would be a nightmare. The built in file browser will only allow uploading individual files so I’d need to create all the directories manually. Got to be an easier way right???

Boot the existing install, plug the usb drive, delete the existing contents of the config folder minus key/copy the contents of the one from the USB minus key using UD / the file browser, done?

Thanks. Was hoping to do some of the initial setup before shutting down the old server. Gonna be a lot of lives destroyed because Plex is down for an unbearable period of time (more than 30 minutes 😁).

Looks like I must have screwed something up with transferring /config. All users are missing. Still have the old flash. What file controls this?
