Can I move the system share (docker and libvert from what I can see) from one nvme to another? Does my setup even make sense?

Featured Replies

I’ve had unraid for a year or two and i set up my two nvmes with advice from people at the time as a cache drive for stuff to download to temporarily (usually ends up being there for a month or two til the cache is full (1tb) then i empty it) and move to the hdd and one as a a drive labeled ‘apps’ which was to be any docker app metadata and system stuff.

Somehow the system share is on the ‘cache’ drive though and now i wanna move it to the ‘apps’ drive if it’s an easy thing to do. If not, i’ll leave it alone. Not sure if this is the best use of my drives btw. The ‘apps’ drive uses barely any storage at all—78.7gb rn and if i move the system share to it there would be ~100gb space taken up.

Thanks guys!

You can move the system share using the mover, just make sure to disable Docker and VM service first.

Go into settings > docker and set it to disabled. Then while still in the settings, go to VM Manager and also set it to disabled.

Then click on the "Shares" tab and click on the system share, when the share setings appear, assign the secondary storage to the drive you want to move the data to. Right below that should be mover direction, set mover from Cache -> Apps.

Back on the Main tab, at the bottom, click mover and wait. Open the system log by pressing the >_ looking icon in the upper right corner, when mover is done it will say "Mover Finished"

After that, browse the app drive and validate the files now exist on that drive and not the other. Then you can go back and start up those services again.

Do note: If you hardcoded /mnt/cache anywhere on either the docker settings or vm manager settings, it will write new files to the cache drive again. make sure these paths say /mnt/user/system/...

Okay, i really appreciate your instructions but i’m sure i messed something up because im dumb lol. Here is what my system share settings are now, after moving they still exist in the cache not apps drive. Thanks for any help!

Huzzahhhh! Worked perfectly. Now the cache drive just has 154mb taken up which is random. Do i have to change any settings or anything in the system share or do i just leave it as is now? Thanks a ton guys.

You can now set Apps to be primary storage, and set Secondary storage to None. After doing that make sure you have Settings-Global Share Settings->Exclusive Shares enabled so that you get maximum performance on the 'system' share since it is all on the 'Apps' pool (may need to reboot to get this activated).

You also want the 'appdata' share to be set up in a similar way.

Another point - if you have not already done so make sure you set a Minimum Free Space on the 'cache' pool to avoid it filling up too far and causing problems.
