[Plugin] UGREEN LED Control – LED control for UGREEN DX/DXP NAS

Featured Replies

UGREEN LED Control

UGREEN LED Control lets you use the front LEDs of UGREEN DX/DXP NAS devices under Unraid. You set colour, brightness and effect for every LED from a web interface, and a status mode turns the bay and network LEDs into a live view of your array: disk activity, disk errors, SMART warnings, parity checks and standby. Night mode, Unraid alerts and a shutdown signal on the power LED, and a dashboard tile are included.

It talks to the LED controller directly over I²C. No kernel module is needed, so Unraid updates with a new kernel don't break it.

Project status

Current version: 0.23.0. The plugin is developed and used daily on a DXP6800 Pro with Unraid 7.3.3. Users have confirmed it on the DXP4800, DXP4800 Plus, DXP4800 Pro and DXP8800 Plus – thank you! Feedback from owners of other models is very welcome. The full list of changes is in the release notes.

Requirements

  • Unraid 7.0 or newer

  • A UGREEN DX/DXP NAS (LED controller at address 0x3a on the SMBus I801 adapter)

  • No other LED plugin running. If you use ugreenleds-driver, uninstall it first: both would write the same LEDs.

Features

  • Web interface under Settings → User Utilities, with a live picture of the case showing the real LED colours and each bay's temperature or state

  • Colour, brightness and effect per LED: static, breathe and pulse (run by the controller itself), rainbow and CPU temperature (with speed, direction and "only when idle")

  • Status mode: bay LEDs blink on disk activity, switch to an error colour for disabled or missing disks, warn on rising SMART values (reallocated, pending, uncorrectable sectors, read/write errors) with an "Acknowledge" button, and breathe during parity checks and rebuilds. Spun-down disks can stay normal, dim, switch off or pulse slowly. Optionally each bay shows its disk's temperature, based on Unraid's own warning and critical limits.

  • The network LED can blink with traffic, only show the link (steady, error colour without link or gateway), or stay manual with its own colour and effect

  • Network LED by link speed: one colour per speed (10M, 100M, 1G, 2.5G, 5G, 10G), all changeable. A link that negotiated less than it could, for example 1G instead of 2.5G or 10G because of a bad cable, stands out at a glance

  • Network ports in the case picture: next to the LAN LED each port is drawn as an RJ45 socket with its speed ("2.5G", "10G"), in the colour of that speed; a port without a link is a dimmed socket with a cross and the speed it supports

  • Shutdown and reboot signal: the power LED blinks or breathes in a colour of your choice from the moment Unraid stops the array during a shutdown or reboot (a plain array stop doesn't trigger it), with a test button

  • Night mode: dim or switch off the LEDs at fixed times, also across midnight; the brightness slider keeps showing your day setting

  • Unraid alerts: the power LED blinks while Unraid has unread warnings or alerts

  • Identify a bay: blink one bay white for 30 seconds before you pull a disk

  • Compact dashboard tile with the live LEDs of every bay (a state is only written out for an error or SMART warning); the view with temperatures is a setting

  • Dark, light or "same as Unraid" colour scheme; interface in English, German and Spanish

  • Every setting saves on change and survives a reboot

The System page shows which applies to your device. Use "Identify" on the Drives page to check that the right bay blinks. The DXP2800 V1.2 and the GT models aren't supported yet.

Installation

Plugins → Install Plugin, paste this URL and click Install:

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/alexanderschubert/ugreen-led-control/main/plugin/ugreen-led-control.plg

The plugin has been submitted to Community Applications and is waiting for review. Until it's listed there, install it with the URL above; updates show up under Plugins as usual (Check for Updates).

First steps

  1. Open Settings → User Utilities → UGREEN LED Control.

  2. On the System page, check that the LED controller is found.

  3. On the Drives page, press "Identify" on each bay and check that the right one blinks.

  4. Pick your colours and brightness, then switch the default mode to Status-based if you want activity and error display.

  5. Under LED settings → Network LED you can colour the network LED by link speed.

  6. Set up night mode, Unraid alerts and the shutdown signal if you like (System page). Under System → Appearance you can change the colour scheme, the language and the dashboard tile.

Coming from ugreenleds-driver

Uninstall ugreenleds-driver, then install this plugin and reboot once. UGREEN LED Control doesn't need the led_ugreen kernel module; it unloads it if an older setup left it behind.

How it works

A small static tool (ugreen-led-i2c, written in Go) talks to the LED controller through /dev/i2c-N, using the protocol documented by miskcoo/ugreen_leds_controller. A shell backend and a status daemon read Unraid's own state (disks.ini, var.ini, cached SMART data, notifications) and never wake sleeping disks. The plugin loads the Intel SMBus driver itself if Unraid hasn't. The shutdown signal hangs on the array stop that Unraid runs during a shutdown or reboot. Settings are stored in /boot/config/plugins/ugreen-led-control/leds.cfg.

Questions and problems: please post in this thread and include

  • your NAS model and Unraid version

  • the plugin version (System page)

  • the output of these commands:

/usr/local/emhttp/plugins/ugreen-led-control/backend/ugreen-led-ctl status
/usr/local/emhttp/plugins/ugreen-led-control/backend/ugreen-led-ctl smbus

Translations

The interface is available in English, German and Spanish. Another language? The texts are in a single file; the README explains how to export them as a template and check a translation. Pull requests or a JSON in an issue are both fine.

Credits

  • miskcoo for working out the LED controller protocol and the bay layouts

  • ich777 for the ugreenleds-driver plugin, which showed how LED control can work on Unraid

  • ivolution for the Spanish translation and many careful suggestions

  • everyone in this thread who tested on their model and reported what they found

Working great on normie DXP4800 under Unraid 7.3.3 - love the customisations - many thanks!

I can confirm that it works on the DXP8800 Plus!

Now I just need to get a little more familiar with the customization options and effect, which aren't entirely clear to me yet, but everything else is working perfectly!

Thanks for this plugin!

I really appreciate the ability to customize the colors from the UI
I have seen one small issue with the refresh: if you change a color by entering the hexadecimal value directly, the color preview doesn't update.

Ciao

Great to hear it works on the DXP8800 Plus now, thanks for confirming!

The hex preview is fixed in 0.17.3 (Plugins → Check for Updates): the swatch now follows as soon as a complete hex value is typed.

A quick guide to the options:

  • Default mode → Manual: every LED shows the colour, brightness and effect you set. Status-based: the bay LEDs show disk activity, errors, SMART warnings, parity checks and standby; the network LED shows traffic or the link.

  • Effects: Static, Breathe and Pulse run in the LED controller itself. Rainbow and Temperature (colour follows the CPU temperature) are driven by the plugin. Under Effect settings you choose which LEDs they apply to and how fast they run. In status mode, effects only apply to the power LED and a manual network LED.

  • Drives → Status display: what the bay LEDs show in status mode (colour by temperature, standby dimmed/off/pulsing, parity and SMART colours).

  • Schedules: night mode, and unread Unraid alerts on the power LED.

If anything is unclear, just ask here!

I can just confirm what others already wrote: Amazing tool!

Works already very well in the current version 0.17.2 on my DXP4800Plus with Unraid 7.3.3 at the moment. All Identification of component was done automatically and therefore hassle-free.

Some small issues that I have experienced and could be improved in my point of view:

  1. Inconsistent mode for saving the settings.
Out of a user perspective: On all pages settings should either 1. be saved automatically (like it is the case on the overview page of the settings menu) or 2. by clicking on the "Save" button (as it is the case on the schedule page of the settings menu).

  2. During night mode, the brightness bar in the general settings gets set to the night mode brightness setting.
Maybe this is just me, but I would have expected to set the general brightness there and that the value stays like that, also during night mode.

If it is of interest for you, I can offer a translation from German or English to Spanish.

Thank you for the detailed feedback – both points are fixed in 0.18.0 (Plugins → Check for Updates):

Saving: every setting now saves on change, on all pages; the Save buttons are gone.

Night mode: the brightness slider keeps showing your day setting, with a note until when night mode dims the LEDs. Changing it at night sets the day brightness and the LEDs stay dimmed.

And yes, I’d gladly take you up on the Spanish translation! The interface is ready for it. All texts and a short how-to are here: alexanderschubert/ugreen-led-control#37 – just post the translated JSON there (or here in the forum) and I’ll build it in.

Thanks for this plugin! With upgrading to Unraid 7.3.3 my previous UGreen LED plugin wasn't working anymore, it couldn't be updated. Although I'm currently at another location and cannot physically check my NAS, your plugin installed without problems and is not giving any errors so it would seem it works on the new Unraid 7.3.3. 👍

(I have a DXP6800 Pro btw)

So again, thanks!

I'm testing version 0.19 and have noticed (though this was also present in version 0.17, which I tested previously) some issues with setting the brightness of individual LEDs.

If I set one or two LEDs to a certain value (for example, 50%) and then try to do the same for the following ones, the previous values revert to their original settings shortly afterward, and the same thing happens in other cases as well.
I also tried setting the brightness to the same level for all the LEDs on the overview page, where it seems to apply the settings as soon as you set them, but after about two seconds, some of the LEDs revert to their previous values.

Thanks for the precise description! I found several ways this could happen when LEDs are changed quickly one after another (settings saved by two requests at once overwriting each other, a rewrite by the status daemon in between, and an aborted write when one LED fails), and fixed them in 0.19.2 (Plugins → Check for Updates).

If you still see LEDs jump back, please run this right after it happens and post the output, so I can tell whether the LED, the saved setting or only the page is wrong:

And did it happen in manual or in status-based mode?

The problem isn't solved! I still have an LED that reverts to its previous level.

What I'm seeing is that when I change the brightness value, the LED changes, but shortly afterward (I think one or two seconds later), the brightness reverts to its previous value—even if I change the brightness on the overview page.

I ran the test in “Status mode.”

If I try it in manual mode, changing the percentage in the overview, it seems to work. As soon as I return to status mode, the LED goes back to the previous value.

Thanks, your output explains it: disk2_brightness is 127, but the LED sits at 38, which is exactly 30 % of 127. The disk in bay 2 is spun down, and Drives → Status display → Disks in standby is set to “Dimmed” (30 %), so in status mode the plugin dims that LED a few seconds after you change it. Nothing is being reverted, but the slider showed the dimmed value, which made it look that way. In manual mode there’s no standby dimming, which is why it works there.

Version 0.19.3 makes this visible: the slider keeps your setting, and the LED table says “in standby dimmed to 30 % of this brightness”. If you don’t want standby dimming, set Disks in standby to “Normal” (or raise the level).

Perfect, thanks.

I had forgotten about the brightness setting in standby mode.

Now that all the drives are active, I can actually see them all at the same brightness.
Thanks

You are welcome and thank you!

Is the lack of persistency when I mark your plugin as a favorite and update it some time later something you can influence?
Unfortunately I cannot compare it with other plugins, which I have marked as favorites, as they did not get an update since then (at least I think so).

I am on it. For now I will call it a night and sleep, but will likely finish tomorrow.

I plan to post it in the Github discussion you also proposed.

I already stumbled upon one question though: What do you refer to by 'below' in the sentence "... colour without a connection; below it can glow steadily ..."? I assume you described the position of the different choices in the dropdown menu. If this is the case, I would drop/replace that word entirely (in English as well as other languages).
If my assumption is wrong, please let me know what you refer to.

Your assumption was close, but I meant the “Network LED” setting right below the default mode – the sentence was confusing. I’ll reword it to name the setting: “…shows the error colour without a connection; the “Network LED” setting lets it glow steadily or stay manual instead.” Please translate that new wording; the JSON in the issue will be updated within a few minutes. Thanks for the careful reading!

About the favorite: I’m not sure what exactly you mark. Is it a star in the Unraid header (e.g. from the “Quick Favorites” plugin or Unraid itself), a Community Applications favorite, or something else? And what exactly is lost after the update – the star, the entry, or its icon? The plugin keeps its settings in /boot/config/plugins/ugreen-led-control/, and its settings page keeps the same address (/Settings/UGREENLEDControl) across updates, so I’d expect a favorite pointing at it to survive. If you tell me which Unraid version and which favorites feature, I can look into it.

Thank you for the extensive explanation.

I was only aware of the Favorites function that's build in, to be activated for a single app/plugin via the small heart icon on the upper right of the bigger app/plugin's icon; and available on different parts of the Unraid WebGUI. For plugins (to my best knowledge) this is only available under "Settings" and in case of your plugin in the "User Utilities" section.

I run the current Unraid 7.3.3.

Thanks for the details, that was the missing piece! Unraid keeps a favorite as a label on the plugin’s page file and only puts it back at boot, so an update dropped it until the next reboot. Version 0.19.5 restores it right away after an update (Plugins → Check for Updates). Your favorite should now stay.

And thank you for the Spanish translation – no hurry!

Thank you so much – the Spanish interface is built in and will be in 0.20.0 (pull request alexanderschubert/ugreen-led-control#46)! I checked every text against the English source before using it. Three fixes, in case you want to look: night.state_day/night.state_night used {hora} instead of {time} (the placeholder names have to stay as they are, otherwise the time shows up empty), and alerts.level_warning was left in English while alerts.level_alert held the warning text – I set them to “Advertencias y alertas” / “Solo alertas”.

On your thoughts: (1) good idea – there’s now scripts/i18n.py that exports the texts as JSON and checks keys, placeholders and HTML against English, and CI runs it; (4) agreed, the English is changed to “Nighttime/Daytime”; (5) thanks, I’ll ask native speakers in the forum for feedback. I’d keep whole sentences instead of reusable word modules, because gender and word order differ too much between languages.

Two questions for you as a native reader: should night.brightness be “Iluminación nocturna” (feminine), and would you prefer one term for brightness throughout (“Brillo”), instead of “Luminosidad” and “Iluminación”?

Once again and first of all: You are very welcome! Thank you for your work on this helpful plugin. I am happy I can "give back" with the translation in some way.

I was aware of the placeholder names and their function. But the "hora" unfortunately slipped through - good that you/Claude catched that.

And the translation you used (“Advertencias y alertas” / “Solo alertas”) in the end for alerts.level_warning and alerts.level_alert sounds good and correct for me.

Thank you also for your feedback on my ideas/thoughts.
I also get the decision regarding keeping the whole sentences.

One information regarding the feedback from native speakers: Keep in mind when receiving it that "array" in the computer science/IT field is usually translated differently to Iberian and Latin American Spanish. As this is the only case that I came across here, I decided to simply give both translations, more or less side by side ("Los discos de la matriz/de arreglo muestran ..."), as 2 different Spanish language versions, as they would only differ in one sentence, would be overkill imho.

Two questions for you as a native reader: should night.brightness be “Illumination nocturna” (feminine), and would you prefer one term for brightness throughout (“Brillo”), instead of “Luminosidad” and “Iluminación”?

  1. Correct catch with my "misgendering" of an adjective that describes Iluminación, as it is feminine, but

  2. yes, I would definitely prefer one Spanish term for the English "brightness". I lean towards "luminosidad" when to decide between this word and "Iluminación", as it the semantic is narrower towards the English "brightness". Definitely "brillo" should not be used, as it's semantic is more towards the English "shimmer" or "glow". While checking I saw I also kept "brillo" one time in a translation.
(Those are good examples for why I asked before if modularization of the translations/words is a viable option. 😄).

I will add a new version of the json code with the Spanish translations on Github (and correcting all errors hopefully).

Works on DXP2800! Many thanks. 👍

Very good plugin, thanks a lot for what you did here, this is excellent !

Like most, the initial plugin I was using stopped working with Unraid 7.3.3 but what you are providing here is a big improvement !

For the record I am using it on a DXP8800 PRO that has not been reported here so far, so just to tell that it works well.
