July 28, 201213 yr while i wait for my array to rebuild, i was wondering whether there is an easy way to reach the web GUI of unRaid from the outside world...i'd like to monitor the progress and drive temps while i'm on a short trip. i tried to set up an arbitrary port on my router via port forwarding (using the DynDNS service i have), pointed at the IP of the unRaid, but it doesn't seem to know what to do with that URL. if i missed a topic in regard to this, please post a link.
July 28, 201213 yr Easy=not secure. The easiest secure way is to leave a workstation with remote access software running inside your network, then you can log in to it and monitor progress from there. http://www.logmein.com has free accounts that work on windows and mac.
July 28, 201213 yr Author thanks...since i already have a remote desktop set up, i might go the route that jonathanm suggested, then inquire into the notification emails once i go back to installing unMenu (which i disabled to troubleshoot some problems last year), as per your suggestion StevenD.
July 29, 201213 yr I access all my servers over the internet securely all the time but it is not straight forward. basically instead of using cheap plastic routers I run pfsense on a mini itx atom board with VPN setup and connect to any computer on my local network over VPN using the same private ip's im used to this I prefer to running hamachi or trying to open ports.
July 29, 201213 yr basically instead of using cheap plastic routers I run pfsense on a mini itx atom board with VPN setup Personally I run openvpn on a cheap plastic router reflashed with openwrt. Less wattage and much cheaper than a mini pc, and still has plenty of horsepower for what I do.

July 29, 201213 yr Why flash openwrt when that router comes with dd-wrt (and openVPN)? Because dd-wrt has some issues or just plain can't handle doing some of the other things I let the router handle. If you don't need anything beyond what the base package provides, dd-wrt is great. Openwrt gives me more flexibility and stability when you ask for more functionality. If all you want is a router with openvpn, you are right, just leave it stock.
