RMA disk looks like crap; how to frame my request to WD

Recommended Posts

Had a red ball incident last week on my second server. Shut down, checked cabling (all good), rebooted, still red ball, could not pull a S.M.A.R.T. report. Swapped it for a warm spare and rebuilt the disk. Server is doing great.

Contacted Western Digital. I told them a disk was not able to return a S.M.A.R.T. report. Packed it up and mailed it away.

Replacement arrived yesterday; a WD1002FAEX. I started the preclear right away and noticed some errors, and the speed dropped off really quickly. Current status: Pre-Read. 74% @ 11 MB/s (17:32:55). It's already hours late to complete the first preclear.

The question is, do I repeat the reason for RMA as a S.M.A.R.T. issue, or is there something better I can say?

WD just pissed me off last night.  The HDD in my Zotac ZBOX was DOA but the computer itself runs fine.  I was replaced the drive in it with an SSD when I first got it anyway so I had no use for the HDD until recently in another box.  But it isn't recognized by the bios.  I noticed this when I tried to put it in a 2.5 in external USB enclosure and it wasn't recognized.  Checked with direct connection and bios doesn't show it.

Fast forward a month I'm finally getting around to RMA'ing it.  I see that WD is forcing you to register it first before you can RMA it now.  So I do that and it shows up as NO warranty (because it was in the Zotac I assume).  Left them a nasty gram about how I didn't think I should have to return a whole computer because of their NON functioning drive.  The computer works great and has been for the past month.  Trying Zotac to see what they can do now.

That's the way it works in the OEM world. WD has multiple tiers of pricing, depending on the level of support they are obligating themselves to. The very cheapest option is only available to a large computer manufacturer, WD contracts to supply a quantity of drives at a low price, and with a limited warranty that only applies to the direct customer, the manufacturer. It's up to the manufacturer to set their own warranty terms with their customer, and wd never deals with anyone other than the manufacturer, greatly reducing their support costs. If you want support directly from wd, you have to buy a bare wd product through distribution or in a wd retail box. It's generally accepted that a drive purchased as part of a system from a large computer manufacturer will never have warranty rights with anyone but the manufacturer.
