October 8, 201213 yr Is anyone using a DNS program to access their server from the Internet? I'm wondering if there is anything out there that would make it easier for me to access my home server across the Internet. Right now using one of those DNS services is the easiest so far but was wondering if there are other things out there better? I remember DLINK had a free service when you bought their router but I can't find their website anymore. And of course you had to have their name in the URL. What else is out there?
October 8, 201213 yr I'm using no-ip.com from my router (pfsense) to locate my server and point ports to unraid for crashplan and torrent server
October 9, 201213 yr dyndns.org my netgear router supports it, i set it up about 4 years ago, never had to tweak or do anything. it just works.
October 9, 201213 yr I don't use DynDNS on my router though because I use DNS-O-Matic to update my DynDNS and OpenDNS accounts at the same time and my router does not support DNS-O-Matic. I have a little app that runs on an always on PC to update DNS-O-Matic for me. DD-WRT supports DNS-O-Matic though.
October 25, 201213 yr I have a dnsmadeeasy account for my business. I have dynamic DNS setup on one of my domains through them -- although it is not as easy as dyndns or zo etc
October 25, 201213 yr For some reason last night my DNS host was deleted from dyndns. I had to create a new one and the old domain I was using is no longer available on the free service.
December 31, 201213 yr Its now a "trial". After the trial is up, you have the option to cancel and can keep a the domain and like maybe 1 free host.
December 31, 201213 yr I guess I'm a slave to microsoft. For my home use use, I am using the free SSL account with dynamic DNS that comes with WHS2011 that is hosted by Go Daddy. It is one of those, "it works so why mess with it?" situations. My registered domain address all go to static IP's.
December 31, 201213 yr If you operate a bind server and have dd-wrt you can use your own domain name for dynamic DNS. I do this with dnsmadeeasy, which we use for all of our enterprise dns. It's very reliable, but not very attractive pricing for a consume level DNS zone.
