July 21, 201312 yr I got home from my time away and saw my keyboard flashing (num lock scroll lock caps lock) lights. Turned on my unraid console screen and there was a bunch of errors. Couldn't input anything to unraid. Upon reboot seems disk 8 was no longer detected in bios, as well as unraid GUI. However when I access my disk 8 share I can see everything on it. How can I make a FRESH CONFIG of unraid (KEEPING ALL MY DATA) and starting everything fresh? I am in the process of preclearing a new disk to replace disk 8, but I can not remember how to make a fresh clean unraid config. I remember doing it once before, I made all new config files and shares, when I started my raid all disks were BLUE, until I started and did a parity check. Then I was able to access all my data. Any ideas, UnRAID seems really wonky and I want to try a fresh config before I scrap it. Thanks
July 21, 201312 yr You cannot create a fresh config and keep all of your data with a missing disk. Does the disk have a red ball?
July 21, 201312 yr Author Yes it does have a red ball disk8 Not installed - 1,953,514,552 39,293,600 yet I can access the disk and play media from it. However I don't see the disk in bios, its really strange, I am preclearing a disk now to install in place of this disk 8, then I would like to do a fresh install of everything on the flash (keeping my data in tact) Do you understand what I mean, make all new config files (fresh unraid) but keeping data in tact
July 21, 201312 yr If drive 8 is red balled, then unRaid is not using it What you are actually seeing for drive 8 is the "reconstructed" data. You would see that all your drives are spun up and that the read counts on all the drives (including parity) are increasing as you access drive 8 files.
July 21, 201312 yr As greywolf noted, you are only able to access disk8 because of the "magic" of UnRAID's fault tolerance. Any data you access from that disk is actually being reconstructed by reading ALL of the other disks plus parity and reconstructing the data. You can NOT create a new config -- or you'll lose all of the data from disk8. What you need to do is (a) confirm that the issue isn't simply a loose SATA or power cable (or, if it's in a hot-swap cage, that it's firmly seated); and (b) if it's not one of those problems, replace the drive. Then UnRAID will rebuild the data onto the new drive. Unplug all the cables (or unplug the drive from its cage); and then reseat everything, being sure all is firmly connected. Then boot again -- and if you still get the same problem it's time to buy a replacement drive.
July 21, 201312 yr Author correct, my replacement drive is being pre-cleared as we speak, so that will take a good 24 hours or so, 19 generally. Then I will put that drive back in replacing the current disk 8. Allow it to rebuild. What I was wanting to do once my array is at full 100% is create an all new file set, almost basically a fresh flash. I am currently using unraid 4.7 Pro, but have these odd issues here and there, so my thoughts were creating a new config set and see how it goes. Thanks for all the feedback, I vaguely remember how to create a new config set, i think you have to rename some files to _old and replace with new ones (keeping the old ones) in case something doesn't work right.
July 22, 201312 yr It's easy to do. Keep a copy of the *.key file from the config directory and then delete everything on the USB drive. Download the version you want and install it. Put the key file back in place. Plug the USB into the server and boot.
July 22, 201312 yr Author OK I thought you had to do something different. When I do that all drives should come up BLUE until I parity check. Then I should be back to normal ?
July 23, 201312 yr I believe you go to the Utils tab and use the new config and then you do the parity check.
July 23, 201312 yr Likely have to type initconfig on the command line then. I'm not positive if this is necessary the first time or not. Possibly you just assign the drives and start the parity check. If you want to keep the data on the drives then DO NOT assign a data drive as parity.
July 25, 201312 yr Author Yah everything went well with the lost drive / rebuild, but I am still having that same issue where I can not copy data to the server without it losing the network connection. I have no idea what it is. I have added different network cards as well and still no changes. I get CAPS LOCK AND SCROLL LOCK, flashing on my keyboard on my console, with a series of error lines. I have no input to the console at this point and have no choice to do a HARD POWER DOWN. I have done memtests they succeed, tried different PCI NICs, Perhaps it is the motherboard ? Maybe it is software ? I don't know? Here are 2 separate image files that I took with my camera of the console screen. Hope it helps ? http://postimg.org/gallery/1n1guheu/79d65a4e/ Maybe there is a better motherboard I could use for this server ? Another error as I was copying / lost connection to server and can't do anything from console http://postimg.org/image/8s6odlma9/5829e791/
August 17, 201312 yr Author Could anyone then just let me know what might be a new good motherboard to run for this server. This BioStar one I went with because someone recommended it to me, but whenever I use my old intel board it seems much better I am willing to buy new hardware because I am sick of this issue and i think it is hardware related. Anyy recommendations would be greatly appreciated, thank you
August 18, 201312 yr Find a board that will use your current RAM and CPU that has as many SATA ports as possible. You'll also want built in graphics and Gig-E.
August 24, 201312 yr Author Still having issues with this server I can't figure out what it is still. I was just copying drive to drive on the server it self and it locked up. I would copy 800mb from disk 3 to disk 8 and it locks up. I can only hard power the server off. I can't figure out what is going on Could anyone recommend me a motherboard that may work well for me? Right now I have 10 drives in my server... 6 connected to onboard sata and 4 on a promise tx400, I only have a intel board laying around that would only get me by with 8 drives, and it is only 100mbit any thoughts ? Also, can I just switch mobos on the fly without any hassle ? was looking at this board http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=64945&vpn=760GM-P23%20%28FX%29&manufacture=MSI&promoid=1360 As well I am still using UNRAID 4.7 Pro, have not changed to 5 RC build
August 24, 201312 yr Yes, you can "switch on the fly" -- UnRAID isn't tied to any specific motherboard. I'd get a PCIe controller for your additional disks => the old Promise PCI controller is definitely a bottleneck in your performance (although it shouldn't be the cause of your issues). Buy a quality board; be sure you have a good power supply (active PFC, 80+ certification); and your system should run just fine.
August 24, 201312 yr Author Yah I have a good power supply, I dunno if it is files on my flash that are causing this issue, or if it is hardware, it has been like this for months and I am really getting sick of it. If I am going with a new mobo (currently using a AM3 chipset) I want to be sure it is going to do the job. I think it is this cheap old biostar motherboard, whenever I use my intel board for testing with unraid it seems to blow this board out of the water. Looking at it closely right now it may be the issue. I am thinking the MSI board would be a good bet, but can't be too sure. It's weird I am copying 10gb from my local PC to my server now (copy to disk 3) and it is going fine without lockup, however when i copy from disk 3 to disk 8 for example internally on the server, it locks up. Disk 3 and Disk 8 are both on the promise IDE TX 400 card.
August 24, 201312 yr It's VERY unlikely that it's anything on your flash drive. Once UnRAID boots, it doesn't use the flash at all for any system-level functions.
August 24, 201312 yr Author Perhaps 4.7 could be an issue with NIC / Mobo / Hardware , and I should go to 5 release client. sigh, I just don't want to mess anything up here and am really wanting my stable server back :-( http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=17247.0 ASUS M5A78L-M LX Plus mATX AM3+ DDR3 AMD 760G 1PCI-E16 2PCI-E1 1PCI SATA2 VGA GBLAN Motherboard perhaps this board, asus generally makes a quality product
August 26, 201312 yr Author Awesome, thank you. I am trying to now track down a 4 port PCI-E / SATA card that will work with this, I can only find SAS cards This one looks half decent >> SIIG DP SATA 6Gb/s 4-Port Hybrid PCIe (SC-SA0R11-S1) Link >> http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=48_19_901&item_id=063148
August 26, 201312 yr That card should work but only on PCIe 2.0. Otherwise it will be a bottleneck. For a little more money you can get an 8 port AOC-SASLP. SAS supports SATA drives with a breakout cable.
