July 31, 201312 yr I have one of the disks that comes in this thing, the 5K4000, in my server. Nice drive. It's fast but it runs a little warm for a 4TB 5400RPM drive compared to the 4TB Seagate ST4000DM000 that runs as the same rotational speed.
July 31, 201312 yr Seems like a good deal, except that it's only 1 year warranty. The internal version is still available for $151.99 and it has a 3 year warranty - HGST 4TB Deskstar Coolspin 3.5" SATA III Internal Desktop Hard Drive Kit. Is $22 more worth it for an internal with a longer warranty?
July 31, 201312 yr Damn! Been waiting a long time for more drives... but never will I buy external drives again. @bw1, I would definitely go for the longer warranty -- besides the fact that removing externals from the case voids a lot of warranties...unsure if that it the situation with this drive though.

August 6, 201312 yr been buying WD RED drives myself lately just thought I'd post it. I'm also a big fan of WD Reds ... VERY reliable, run very cool, and use very low power => with excellent performance. Note that the 4TB Reds are due out in September, and 5TB units in December
August 7, 201312 yr I'm expecting Black Friday deals on 4tb drives to approach $100, perhaps even drop below. 4tb will be the sweet spot this Christmas... 5tb are likely to stay high for awhile.... I buy my drives once a year on Black Friday.... Still have a few 3tb left from the 11 that I got last year at $89 ea.

Not necessarily a bad strategy ... but I hope you thoroughly tested the drives rather than just putting them away for when needed => either a couple cycles of pre-clear, or a couple cycles of the manufacturer's extended test.

You bet, a few preclear cycles back then, and 6 months later a few more.... I've had one 3tb Seagate go bad on me this year. Second drive out of hundreds that really went bad. The rest are all still going....

I think I'm inclined to go for maybe 5-6 4TBs this year...hopefully should last me through the year.

One or two on Black Friday are no problem. Its when you want to buy lots that it gets tricky.... Here is how to do it: http://blog.backblaze.com/2013/04/01/the-real-story-behind-drive-farming/
