Choosing forward breakout cables

Featured Replies

Hey folks.

I plan to buy an Supermicro SAS2LP-MV8, and will need some forward breakup cables.

There's really only three I found:

3Ware / LSI - no clips holding the SATA's in place

Monoprice - where the SATA part of the cables look like junk (reviews support that)

StarTech - looks great, has latching - twice the price :(

At this point I'll likely go with the 3Ware / LSI ones - but wondering if anyone is aware of any other products out there?

Thanks!  :)

I am currently using the Monoprice cables that you linked to with a Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 controller in my system.  I have used this equipment for about 8 months now, and everything works very well indeed.  The SATA connectors do have clips and the connection to the drives are solid at all times.  No issues whatsoever.

Hope this information helps you somewhat.

Thank you - I appreciate the reply.

I probably will avoid the monoprice ones though.  At this point I'll probably by the 3Ware/LSI ones.  The build quality looks better - the sacrifice of not having the clips probably is ok.

I bought a Fujitsu D2607 controller and it came with a set of cables that is very

well-thought-out.

It's not suitable for connecting backplanes but if you have to connect the bare

drive I find this cable very handy. It's a data/power combo plug and it will fit very

well. No more worries about loose contact of the SATA cable.

Unfortunately you won't find it on Amazon or the like.

You have to search for  T26139-Y4023-V501 which is the FSC part number.

The price is premium but that's worth it to me.

I'll second the commendation for the Monoprice cable, I don't see any issues whatsoever.

My new Monoprice cables are due to arrive today.  I will let you know how they work out.

Another nice 4-drop combo cable can be found from DELL.

The use it in their T110 PowerEdge Servers.

It can be found via Dell PN: 42N7H or 0233TD

Pretty the same as the FSC cable I mentioned.

I use the StarTech cables.  They're probably overly expensive, but they are nice.  I got one as part of a package and liked it enough to buy a second when I needed it.

Can you share a pic?

I'll try to, but I don't think I have a good one from my build so I'll have to get into the server.  In the meantime the ones on NewEgg are a decent representation.

Ah, you mean the ones in the first post?

Well, that's nothing special.

You still have to pull the power cables too.

I've got the Startech one too.  It's like a hydra of regular locking sata cables.
