October 19, 201312 yr hi all, i've been using unraid for about a year and a half, and things are going fairly well have probably a silly question- whenever i power down my array for purposes of adding or removing drives, i always have to crawl behind the unit and hit a little tiny black button way behind it to power it up again i hear others talking about waking their server up with commands etc... here's a picture of my config... any advice on how to do this?
October 19, 201312 yr What kind of case do you have? Also, what you are asking is called WoL or wake on lan and it's a hardware option, not unraid. Check your bios, there should be an option for it in power management or something. I think I have same board, when I get home I will check, but I am sure it is capable. You do need some app capable to send the signal though Sent from my SGH-T889 using Tapatalk
October 19, 201312 yr Author its a 24bay case but not exactly sure, i bought a 'prebuilt' unit... here's the link to my hardware http://www.ebay.com/itm/Custom-Dual-Core-AMD-Opteron-2-0GHz-8GB-DDR2-160GB-IDE-Server-/170810185812?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27c5149854
October 19, 201312 yr Haah , I was about to say that it looks like one of the setups from TAMs and than saw the seller name. :-) If I were you, I would rig the extetnal switch to the front. As for the wol. Check your bios. Also, you can check supermicro, as this mb supports ipmi card. That would let you full control of the server remotely includig shutdown, start up and even remote intall using iso or remote cd hook up Sent from my SGH-T889 using Tapatalk
October 19, 201312 yr There's a pretty good chance that not only does your server support WOL, but that it's set that way by default (most are). Do the following ... (1) Go to the Web GUI; click on Settings; then on Network. Note the MAC address of the network adapter. (2) Download wol-0-5.1-win32.zip from here: http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/downloads.sourceforge.net/w/wa/wake-on-lan/wol/0.5.1/ (3) Extract the contents of the zip file you just downloaded on a Windows machine. (4) Create a shortcut on your desktop to the wol.exe file with your MAC address as an argument to the command. The shortcut should look like this (with the correct path to the folder containing the wol.exe file, and the MAC address changed to yours): "C:\Downloads\WOL Magic Packet Utility\wol.exe" 00:25:90:96:69:C6 (5) Shut down your server. Then double-click on your shortcut ... and the server should turn itself on If the server doesn't turn itself on; then you need to connect a keyboard and monitor to the server; boot to the BIOS; and find he WOL option and enable it. It's ALMOST certain that it supports WOL (very few systems do not).
October 20, 201312 yr Author thanks Gary! not sure if i'm preparing the shortcut correctly or not... here's a pic, with only a partial mac address showing! i entered the full address, but am i doing it in the right spot? when i double click shortcut a dos windows pops up super briefly but nothing happens, server doesn't boot. i can connect a keyboard and monitor although its a bit difficult due to its location. i thought i'd just check that i'm doing the shortcut right first!
October 20, 201312 yr when i double click shortcut a dos windows pops up super briefly but nothing happens ... Actually, something does happen ... i.e. the shortcut is fine. What you're seeing is exactly what should happen => a DOS window will pop up very briefly while the wol command executes and sends the magic packet; then it will close. So what's happening is that it's sending the magic packet; as long as you have the correct MAC address (double-check that); then the server would turn on IF it was set for WOL. Since the server isn't turning on, you'll need to access the BIOS and set it to allow wake-on-LAN. Then your desktop shortcut will turn it on [This is, of course, a lot more convenient than crawling behind the server to turn it on ]
October 20, 201312 yr ... just noticed something else: It probably doesn't matter, since you have no spaces in your path; but just in case, put quotes around the entire command path in the shortcut, but NOT on the MAC address. i.e. change your shortcut to look like this: "C:\Users\Grither\Desktop\wol\bin\wol.exe" 00:30: ... I'm fairly certain that won't change anything -- the command is executing already (thus your brief pop-up window) ... but it won't hurt to have the quotes [they're necessary if there are any spaces in the pathname].
October 21, 201312 yr Author hi gary, thanks for all the work in this response! i do intend to try it, just need to find a bit of time!! will post back, hopefully soon!
October 22, 201312 yr The key thing you need to do next (as I'm sure you know) is connect a monitor and keyboard and set the BIOS for Wake-On-LAN. Once that's done, you'll be able to turn it on with your desktop shortcut
October 22, 201312 yr Author ok got a rare window to work on this! got monitor and keyboard connected, booted to bios settings Can't find wake on lan anywhere! not sure what other words it might be under...went through every single bios setting, but can't find the words 'wake on'... would it be something else? it says amibios 08.00.14 however googling that doesn't seem to help! ok in a bit of other reading, it says i should change my boot order to be LAN first? then my usb flash...hmmm not sure about this. there doesn't seem to be power settings tab! weird? EDIT tried this, but LAN isn't an option for boot order... hmm there is a 'power setup' on one of the tabs, but one is something to change the power button to on/off, or suspend, one is a 'watchdog timer' but not sure what this is, looks like you can select a number of minutes before power down... and one other thing! maybe this board doesn't suppor WOL? here's the link to my MOBO... bios settings are section 4... i'm a bit of a newb so there may be other phrases for WOL that i'm missing? http://www.supermicro.com/manuals/motherboard/MCP55/MNL-H8DM8E-2.pdf another edit- seems to say i need to have a nic with wake on lan...I see that my network cable is just plugged into the onboard network connector so i guess i don't have a card... anyone have a recommendation for one of these? are they expensive?
October 22, 201312 yr Ok, number one it says that lan1 supports all states wol, and lan2 only s1 state, I think it means hibernate, not total off. Number 2, it will only work with oem psu or psu with wol capability,. As in the psu is never actually off, just go into power save mode. I did not have time to boot my server yet, so I am not sure where in the bios it could be set. Sent from my SGH-T889 using Tapatalk
October 22, 201312 yr S1 is a sleep state (S1, S2, and S3 are all sleep states -- S1 is the "least" asleep). S4 is hibernation. In any event, you have to use LAN1 to wake up from S5 (Off). [Think of S3, S4, S5 as "Deep sleep", "Hibernate", and "Off"] The LAN1 port is the top port -- LAN2 is below it. Are you plugged in to LAN1 ? If not, that's probably all that's wrong. The Wake-On-LAN header is to allow WOL if you're using a separate LAN card with WOL support. You should NOT need this as long as you're using the integrated LAN1 port. Note the comment in the manual that says "Wake-On-LAN must be enabled in BIOS" (Page 1-11) Clearly there HAS to be a setting for this !! Look in the ACPI area, power area, etc. You may have some setting enabled that "hides" other power options -- for example, if ACPI was disabled, I suspect it would hide all options related to that. Unfortunately, the manual doesn't show all of the BIOS details, so we can't really help you find this. r.e. the comment above that "... it will only work with oem psu or psu with wol capability " ==> ALL modern ATX power supplies work fine with WOL. This has been required by the ATX spec for a LONG time (since v2.01).
October 22, 201312 yr r.e. the comment above that "... it will only work with oem psu or psu with wol capability " ==> ALL modern ATX power supplies work fine with WOL. This has been required by the ATX spec for a LONG time (since v2.01). good to know. I haven't used WoL ever, so just go with what I read or hear. also I know that original PSU on my server never actually off, even when I shut down the server, the PSU fans were running at reduced speed. now my ATX PSU that I am using now seems to shut down fully (but maybe I am wrong on this one.) that is why I said what I said above.
October 23, 201312 yr Author hmmm puzzling... definitely plugged into lan port 1 not many acpi options in bios! not many power options either...i took some pics of anything acpi related or power related... not much i know! retried the shortcut instructions above, but no luck booting. anyone see anything in the settings i'm missing? sorry for the super huge pics
October 23, 201312 yr Very interesting ... I presume you've looked in all the submenus and don't see anything there either. A couple of possibilities ... (a) There may be some interaction between IPMI and WOL -- check the IPMI configuration to see if it says anything about this. (b) Your BIOS revision shows v2.58; there's a newer version (3.5a) on SuperMicro's site. I'd update the BIOS and see if that provides a WOL option.
October 23, 201312 yr post pictures of all those menus and boot as well. if you referring to my post , I will not do that :-) we, me and OP have the same MB so what ever he is posting will be the same for me. only dif. is I have the latest BIOS version 3.5 and he might not. but there is not much change in it. what I will do is try to boot the server up with Wol Utility the next time I have some free time to work on it. I am building out a new setup using OpenSuse 12.3 + Xen and need to reboot the machine many time. so will simply shut down the whole thing next time and try the Wol ping.

October 23, 201312 yr I have the same board in mine & I've got it working from shutdown... haven't tried from sleep. Try ethtool -s eth0 wol g I added it to my go script also... I'm sure there's a better place to add it... but that's beyond me
October 23, 201312 yr I will post either way but did you try to Wol with your BIOS? I am not sure which LAN port is LAN 1 so I will try on both. by the BUS number one port is on BUS 8 and other ON BUS 9 (at least on my system ) also there is a network scanner from soft perfect that seams to have the Wol function built in so I will try it first before downloading anything special.
October 23, 201312 yr Check out this page... http://www.calculate-linux.org/main/en/wake-on-lan_configuration
