February 2, 201412 yr Hello I'm running Unraid 4.7 and everything is OK I have 1 x 2TB parity, 1 x 2TB and 3 x 1,5TB data drives If I want to replace the 1,5TB drives by 2TB drives, how should I proceed? If I want to upgrade my current version of Unraid (4.7) which one is the most stable/easy to switch to? We use the server every night to watch movies and TV shows, so if it doesn't work after an update, my wife will kill me.....
February 2, 201412 yr Wiki - Replacing a Data Drive Recommend preclearing the new drive first. It will take a little longer, but will test the disk, and your array will not be offline as long since unRAID will not have to clear the disk when adding it. 5.0.5 is the latest stable and no reason to use anything else.
February 2, 201412 yr Author That's a good question.....Nothing fancy for sure. I just use Unraid as a Vanilla server How do i check exactly what is running?
February 2, 201412 yr How do i check exactly what is running? Post a full syslog is easist... http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Troubleshooting#Capturing_your_syslog You mentioned that you stream videos...so you probably have Plex, XMBC, or similar. Round up the latest updated plugins. Not all of those from 4.7 were upgraded to to 5.0. And you might have one of the GUI add-ins...'SimpleFeatures' was very popular, but is no longer supported. Finally, there are some changes in operations with 5.0...these are described in the Readme.txt that's included in the download. The most often ignored one is the change in security. If you only had one userid, 'root', that user can no longer see the contents of shares...another userid has to be created.
February 2, 201412 yr Author I don't have Plex nor XBMC All my files are streamed to my TVs thru my WD TV live Works great Like I said, I think my Unraid is kind of "basic"... By the way, is it possible to "re-balance" my current hard drives? 3 of them are around 85%, and the last one is 22%.... syslog-2014-02-02.txt
February 2, 201412 yr Yes, pretty basic. Upgrading to 5.0.5 should be easy. trurl's message is good guidance. Rebalancing is probably not worth the trouble, unless you have a particular reason. Its not doing any harm, and doesn't affect performance. 'Rebalancing' requires that you access the drives and not the shares, and manually move files around. There's nothing automatic. 1. You would do this either through the console or telnet, then use the MC command to get the Midnight Commander interface. 2. Or You could also make connections from your PC to your unRAID as '/Tower/disk1', '/Tower/disk2', etc. Then you'd use Windows Explorer or Mac Finder to drag and drop folders from one 'disk' to another. Once they were copied, you'd delete the originals.

Preclearing is a good idea for testing purposes, but it doesn't change a drive upgrade time at all. Unraid does not clear a drive that is replacing a current protected drive, it just rebuilds from the rest of the disks. The array is available during the rebuild process, but I wouldn't recommend using it much.

March 5, 201412 yr You can share your disks using samba the same way you do your shares. Click on a disk and check off to share public. Kryspy
March 5, 201412 yr not sure to see where......... In unraid-main, click on the name of the disk under the column "device", it will bring you to a settings page for that disk.
March 5, 201412 yr Accessing the disks directly: Click on the disk name (disk 2 in the example) and set the permissions that you want. My example of my disk 2 shows 'hidden', so that its not normally advertised....I have to deliberately type in the name of the disk. And 'Private' so that Userid and Pswd is enforced so that only I can access the disk directly...everyone else should be using the 'user shares' interface. Your setup may vary. (Also, this is screenshot of the Dynamix web interface...the stock interface is similar.)
March 5, 201412 yr Author When I click on Disk1 for example, I do not see the options you are talking about.....
March 5, 201412 yr Oh! sorry, I thought you had already upgraded to 5.0.5. The security model in 4.7 is different... Perhaps someone else will remember how to get there from here.
March 5, 201412 yr If I remember correctly you need to go to the "Devices" menu. But I could easily be wrong as it has been a LONG time since I had 4.7 installed.
March 5, 201412 yr Click on Shares, the top section is Export Settings, make sure Disk shares (SMB): is set to Export read/write.
March 6, 201412 yr Author Cool.........found it, and it works Thanks to all of you for your detailed answers I LOVE this forum, because I feel that whatever I try to achieve, there will be a lot of people knowledgeable and willing to help....
