March 13, 201412 yr Just curious. I have been with this since the beginning, like when we were still just installing Xen on Arch. I was curious is the upgrade to 4.4 is as simple as -Syyu on my base Arch Dom0. I would obviously snap the LVM in the event things explode, but is there anything else that needs to be done to upgrade to 4.4? Thanks?
March 13, 201412 yr Nope. Xen isn't part of a default repo, and is maintained by a chap called Kantras on AUR. I usually have the latest Xen in my repo, but I'm currently on Xen 4.3.1-2 still I think... As soon as I get my coursework out of the way (2 - 3 weeks) I'll have a bit more time to give back to unRAID and with tinkering with Arch and stuff. Tbh, I'm thinking about switching my host OS away from Arch. I just think I want something a bit less changeable underneath it all, this is assuming I can get things working as I want them of course!! I'm thinking debian atm. Still use my ArchVM for usenet and crap, but the host shouldn't be so fluid. Stuff keeps breaking for literally no reason and it's a bit tiresome when I have my box, and 3 friend's boxes plus all the unRAID people to support on Arch! I need to get things a little more locked down and stable me thinks. This could be misconstrued that I don't like Arch anymore, that is totally NOT true! It's just not best suited to be a hypervisor host due to it's cutting edge status I'm coming the conclusion.
March 14, 201412 yr Author Are you referring to things breaking when you execute a full update? Knock on wood, I have managed to stay stable so far running updates whenever I SSH in. But I also don't run too much, just SAB, Sick and rtorrent (for ISOs...), all in a vm and then my host has nothing really except the basics, Xen, and a few apps for monitoring. Nothing too crazy, so I have been lucky. Is updating with yaourt different than pacman when it comes to updates (-Syu)? If I was to execute yaourt -S xen 4.4 or whatever it is listed as with 4.3 installed, will it recognize the existing package and upgrade or will I end up with both?
March 14, 201412 yr Be careful with yaourt updates. They are really dangerous on a system you rely on. Sent from my S4 via Tapatalk
March 14, 201412 yr It also depends on what aur packages you have. I have been running my lapton on arch for over a year without problems.... Well apart from one aur problem with plymouth
March 14, 201412 yr Author so is there a good easy way to upgrade xen to 4.4? I mean other than from the ground up?
March 15, 201412 yr Author That sucks, so there is no upgrade path other than to install arch again, install Xen, copy configurations and data. That's pretty not fun
March 15, 201412 yr ...........I was curious is the upgrade to 4.4 is as simple as -Syyu on my base Arch Dom0...........but is there anything else that needs to be done to upgrade to 4.4? Thanks? Since you're running an Arch DOM0 then it should be as simple as -Syyu. There's a Xen 4.4 Arch package webpage: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/xen/?setlang=en Or am I missing something? Those of us on unRAID-Xen will have to wait.
March 15, 201412 yr Pacman won't build from AUR. Its quite straightforward, you need to build the 4.4 package using makepkg or whatever. Then install it. Sent from my S4 via Tapatalk
March 16, 201412 yr Author What happens if I do yaourt - S Xen 4.4? Will that put 4.4 along side 4.3 or will It do an upgrade? I don't lie when I saw the answers here are vague, like nobody wants to give guidance. I have arch with 4.3 Xen, how can I get to 4.4? Is it a simple upgrade or does it need a full on rebuild from the ground up?
March 16, 201412 yr Dude. I just told you! Go read the AUR comments so you UNDERSTAND what you're doing before you do it. The package names have changed. Sent from my S4 via Tapatalk
March 21, 201412 yr Xen 4.4 is now in my unraid6 repo. 4.3 is still available but renamed as xen-4.3 Therefore to install 4.4 all you need do is pacman -S xen if you have my repo loaded. Sent from my S4 via Tapatalk

Sent from my S4 via Tapatalk Are you able to update your package to the -2 version of 4.4, I was reading the AUR and saw there were some fixes. I do not know what is involved, so this is just a general request and I know you are busy, so no rush.
April 9, 201412 yr Only a few more days of busyness and then I'm free! My last deadline on Monday. But, Xen is always a fun one to compile and doesn't take too long... I'm just compiling the package as I write this. I'll upload it to the repo within 30 mins.
April 9, 201412 yr Author Awesome, thanks. By rebuild grub, that just means grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg right?
April 10, 201412 yr Author Awesome, thanks. By rebuild grub, that just means grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg right? Yes. Turns out my first pass installed the -1 yet, after that the system didn't boot, there were 2 Xen 4.4 entries in grub and the first didn't boot. I then installed -2 updated again and then things seemed better. One strange thing I found was adding a monitor to the console it tells me it is out of range. Is there a way to set the resolution of the console? If not I can always try another monitor. While usually not needed with remote access, in a pinch it could still prove useful.
April 10, 201412 yr Author You using efi? Its a known issue if you are Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk Good question, I have no idea...

Sent from my S4 via Tapatalk I'm a bit confused ('cause I'm new to all this). I just entered pacman -S xen in your arch image VM and it wants to install 26 packages. That made me think that perhaps I don't already have XEN installed in arch, and that I'm using XEN that comes with unRAID, and I'm not sure updating with your repo will actually update the XEN I'm using for running my current VM images. So, I figured I'd inquire before I install possibly another version of XEN, which I'm afraid might mess things up for me. If my hunch is right, and this would actually install a new/different version, I think I'd prefer to wait for Tom to update unRAID, but maybe there is a way to update unRAID with 4.4 without waiting for Tom. I think I need 4.4 because I've read that it allows passthru of my iGPU, which is better than the ATI card I have installed separately. I'd prefer to use the ATI for unRAID, and the iGPU in my Windows VM. Thoughts?

It doesn't make any sense to install Xen in a VM (Arch) and doing that would not change the version on the host (unRAID). This is for people who are running Arch as the host.
