jeff.lebowski
It's too bad there aren't more 8 SATA port Mini ITX boards. Are there any? Maybe snag one of the low-cost 2 port SATA cards instead of the big boy SuperMicro unit. Quote Link to comment
pyrater
thank you for the reply. any suggestions on the raid card? I normally with go with anything i think would work but since this is for a friend i wanted input from other users. Quote Link to comment

I think this is the one ill pull the trigger on. TY! That card is PCI, and only SATA 1. I don't think you want that one? That MB doesn't have a PCI slot. You need an PCI-E card, and since that is all you'll ever put in there, might as well get one with as many ports as you'll ever need. Something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816124050 Not sure if there are cheaper ones out there, also not sure of that chipsets support in unRAID (didn't look it up) Quote Link to comment
garycase
Two problems in your parts list -- one a minor detail; the other an incompatibility ... => The SATA expansion card you listed will NOT work in that motherboard. The motherboard only has one expansion slot -- a PCIe x16 slot. The card you listed in PCI. => Since you want to use this for virtualization, I'd go with 16GB of memory (2 x 8GB modules) instead of half of that, which you're currently planning on. Not a necessity, but this would give you a lot more "headroom" for VMs. Quote Link to comment
garycase
... Also, if you want to add 4 ports, use at least a PCIe x2 expansion card => 4 ports on an x1 card will be somewhat bandwidth limiting for the drives. This would work well for what you need: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816124060 Quote Link to comment
pyrater
Good advice. But please correct me if I'm wrong any pci X card will work in a 16 slot. The only difference is the number of lanes available to push data. I.E. 1x 2x 4x 8x 16X All work in a 16x slot Quote Link to comment

The only difference is the number of lanes available to push data. I.E. 1x 2x 4x 8x 16X All work in a 16x slot Your terminology is wrong. A PCI X card will NOT work in a PCI Express (i.e. PCIe) slot. But it's true that PCIe cards will work in any slot that has AT LEAST the number of lanes it needs. e.g. a PCIe x16 slot will work for any PCIe card, whether it's 1 lane, 2 lanes, 4 lanes, 8 lanes or 16 lanes. In fact, if you have open-ended slots on the motherboards (some do), you can do that in reverse -- i.e. use a PCIe x8 card in an x4 slot => the card will just run slower because it doesn't have as many lanes as it was designed for [but it will only physically fit if the slot is open at the back].
