Yes it likely would. I've done this with a number of external WD drives. The only caveat is my WD drives seemed to be a little bit smaller than the standard internal drives I've bought. I thought it was a hidden partition (HPA), but never found the source. Since the first 5TB drive you buy will need to be parity, if it's a bit short and you go to add another 5TB internal drive it may be a bit bigger and you won't be able to add it to UnRAID as a data disk. In this situation you will need to take the larger 5TB disk and make it parity, and then take your parity and make it a data drive. Seagate may not have this issue, but every WD 4TB drive I bought had a slightly smaller size than the internal 4TB drives (even though they were exactly the same model #).
June 12, 201412 yr Great deal if you're willing to take a risk of it failing. With the help of other users I have successfully found a way to preclear these. See THIS THREAD]. Slow but sure. And for me this removes most of the risk because preclear is pretty good at finding defective drives. These drives use the same platters and technology used in the pretty highly rated (in Backblaze study) Seagate 4T drives. There is just one more 1T platter. So I am hopeful they will enjoy similar reliability. I doubt this drive has an HPA or is smaller than an external one. If it were to be it would only be a slight PITA to exchange it for a slightly bigger one for parity. Alternatively, creating a tiny HPA on the bigger 5T drive would be even easier, although perhaps not as aesthetically pleasing. At $36 per T this is a good value, better than the deal I got last week. Thinking about one more.
June 13, 201412 yr The price is on par with the 4TB drives. However this only has a 1 year warranty. I'm finding that more important these days.
June 13, 201412 yr If price/TB is a prime consideration, this is a good value. Personally, if I'm going to step over the 4TB mark, I'd pay a slight cost/TB premium ($50/TB) and go with a 6TB unit (which also has twice the warranty): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178520 ... especially for the parity drive, so size wouldn't be an issue as you add more drives later.
