October 13, 201411 yr Hi, I built my Unraid server back in 2009 and it was working great for a long time. When I moved, the server was relegated into a closet where it wasn't turned on for a few years. I finally got it back out, installed a new mobo, cpu, and ram, and plugged the usb drive back in. Using IPMI, I'm remotely trying to boot back up and I'm having some issues. After the initial login, I type in root. Then at root@Tower : ~# I type in ifconfig to try and get the IP address and I just get this: I tried to modify the network cfg to disable dhcp = no but that didn't work either. Also, I do not remember my root password. I did a search on the forum and they mentioned that I should delete password file which I did. And I do not remember which version of Unraid I'm running. I tried doing a search to see which version was out in 2009 but I'm not sure how I would go about upgrading to a more recent version, assuming that would even help. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Jon
October 13, 201411 yr Your network card isn't being detected, it's probably a driver issue, but could be a port issue. What motherboard are you using?
October 13, 201411 yr Author Hi Sureguy, I'm using a Supermicro MBD-x9scm-f-o. I'm accessing the Unraid machine through IPMI, so I'm connected to the Unraid machine via ethernet cable.
October 13, 201411 yr Author I didn't realize that the IPMI ethernet port is just for IPMI. I have since connected another cable to Lan1 and connected that to my router. Still the same result. Unraid still doesn't give me an IP Address. I also went to my network.cfg file and set USE_DHCP=no and entered in my own ip address, netmask, and gateway. I'll then boot up the flash drive and after I type in ifconfig, I DO get a ip address, but when I enter it into the browser it doesn't see it. I went into my router configuration and it doesn't appear to "see" the UNRAID computer. It does however see the IPMI ip address. Lights are on on the ethernet ports so it looks like they're working fine. Those are all things that I've tried in the last few hours and still no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
October 13, 201411 yr Did you try the other LAN port or both connected? Did you set network.cfg back to DHCP? Maybe this can help: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=30046.0
October 13, 201411 yr Author I did set the network.cfg back to dhcp. I haven't tried lan2 but I'll give it a shot tomorrow. Time for bed. Thanks for the reply.
October 13, 201411 yr Author Just because I had an extra thumb drive laying around, I decided to install Freenas on there and load it all up. Much like UnRaid, you boot up the thumbdrive and it gives you an IP address at the of the process. After booting everything up, I DO get an IP address and am I able to log into the server using the supplied IP address given. Trying to duplicate this with the Unraid thumbdrive does not work unfortunately.
October 13, 201411 yr Author hi dgaschk, I enabled lan2 in the BIOS and tried it out. Still the same result.
October 13, 201411 yr Just an FYI, I'm moving this thread to the unRAID 5 support forums as this isn't an unRAID 6 issue. Thanks.
October 14, 201411 yr hi dgaschk, I enabled lan2 in the BIOS and tried it out. Still the same result. perhaps you have to clear network settings.
October 14, 201411 yr Lan 2 for the unraid server the furthest LAN port away from the dedicated IPMI port, and the dedicated IPMI port for IPMI. LAN 1 wouldn't work for Bare metal unRAID only the IPMI. Setup a fixed IP for the BMC/IPMI and a fixed IP in the supermicro bios for the server and then I edited the network.cfg file to tell unRAID what the fixed IP was as I couldn't access the webGUi when I first set it up. I have attached my Network.cfg file so you can see how this is setup. You have to remember the IPMI/BMC has a IP address and the server/BIOS setting has one. This is off the top of my head so don't quote me on it but hopefully it may help you. network.cfg
October 14, 201411 yr Never had any trouble getting this to work, be it on an X9SCM-f, X8SIL-F, X7SPA-F or Asrock E3C226D2I. I always us 2 LAN cables. One for IPMI and one for unraid LAN. I never edited network.cfg.
October 14, 201411 yr Author Hi Everyone, Thanks for the tips. I did try modifying the network.cfg while also utilizing lan2 on the mobo (disabled lan1 in BIOS). I've adjusted and tried all variations and nothing seems to work. Very strange seeing as how tinkering with FreeNas, I get a IP Address and GUI and everything works fine over IPMI over Lan1 and Lan2. I might have to just suck it up and comes to grips with the fact that everything is lost on UnRaid machine and try building a FreeNas box seeing as how I can get FreeNas to work.
October 15, 201411 yr Did you try all 3 LAN ports connected. Or perhaps resetting your router. The mobo is working as it works with freenas. Really would hate losing data because of this. Did you try to put unraid on a new stick and see if you can get that working? unraid works with that mobo, as proven on numerous occasions. Not quite the same problem and a bit more involving: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=4741.msg43512#msg43512 Don't forget with every change like plugging in or switching cables. Power off fully, don't just simply press the reset button or ctrl-alt-del. maybe even switch with the power switch and let the system boot up after that. It happened to me that after power cycling in IPMI a LAN port still wouldn't be recognized. Check if the lights of attached LAN ports are blinking!
November 27, 201411 yr Did you try backing up the thumb drive and upgradi g to a newer unraid version? If i recall correctly, there's a nice upgrading procedure that allows you to keep your disks configuration
