Help Diagnosing Shutdown

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm still pretty new to unraid and linuix in general so I could use a little help figuring out a problem.

About every 10-14 days approximately I'll coming into my office and the server is off.  I can't quite figure out what is happening, I see the log button in the GUI but I don't see any errors or at least any that make sense to me inside that.

I do have APC ups plugin installed, so in theory it will shut off on its own after being on battery power for so long.  But my PC which is plugged into the same UPS isn't turning off, so i'm not sure that's it.

So I don't know if its hard crashing (but why would the power be completely off?), or the APC plugin is shutting it down, or whats happening.  I thought about it overheating, but i mean its usually not even doing anything (well at least when i assume its happening), because it seems to happen overnight.

Does anyone have any thoughts on where to look to figure out what is going on?

Alright thanks, so if i understand correctly this won't let me go back and find out what happened, but if i leave it open i can see what happens the next time it occurs?

Will the session time out, or can i leave it open for 2 weeks?

Last question, is there any difference between doing this and leaving the browser window open for the "Log" button in the top right of the GUI?

Thank you again for the help, I appreciate it.

The log button works as well. It is a new feature. The PC must stay up the entire time or the log info will be lost. It should not time out.

Are you certain the PC is not rebooting when the server is powering off?

I have no idea to be honest.  This is the third time I've walked in the room and the server has just been completely off.  The power light and everything is off.  Usually with a reboot the power light will stay on through the reboot

Well, right about 2 weeks and it happened again.  Went to watch a movie and my server was offline, completely shut down.  And to make things even better, my windows PC installed an update and rebooted itself, so I didn't have a log open.

Even worse this time, after rebooting its showing one of my HDD's as not installed now....so that's great  >:(

Hook up a monitor and keyboard temporarily to the server.

Log in and enter this:

tail -f /var/log/syslog >/boot/syslog.txt

You can then remove the monitor and keyboard.  It will continually save the syslog to the flashdrive.

Alright, I do have a Kvm switch on it so that shouldn't be a problem.

I shut it down till I have time to figure out if that hdd died or not.

Thanks for the advice though, I'll post an update when I have one

  • 1 year later...

I believe it's related to the KVM switcher.  When I switched my KVM to my unraid server it rebooted.

Do you have any kids? This happened to me and I finally figured out my 1 year old daughter liked wandering in the office and pressing the light on my tower... ;D

Happend to me a few times and come to find out I had a bad power supply.  :o

When you turn on your server is it demanding you run a parity check or anything else out of the norm?

I do have kids, but if I recall correctly it turned out to be a bad hard drive?  I think... either way its not rebooting continuously anymore :)
