Thoughts on CPU

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I am getting ready to purchase hardware for my next build. I am going with this board - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182821 and wanted to see your thoughts on processor. I was originally sold on this - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117317 but this http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KPRWAX8/ref=psdc_229189_t2_B00KB4AI5W looks like a good possibility as well. The i7 supports hyperthreading which the xeon does not. Do you guys have any input?

I love that motherboard.  ;D

The Xeon E3-1276 v3 looks to support hyperthreading.

Yet it has an embedded video chip that will never be used by the motherboard.

As does the i7

The i7 runs up to 4gz and turbo boosts to 4.4.

Either of these would be beneficial for hashing files, virtualization, transcoding. etc etc.

If you don't see yourself doing that you may get away with a lower end processor.

I have the

Intel Xeon E3-1241 v3 Haswell 3.5GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1150 80W

Given the speed boost and modest price variance I might choose the faster one these days.

However, I would check directly with supermicro on the CPU's you've chosen. In particular the i7.

The Xeon is definitely a better choice.  It DOES support hyperthreading ... and it supports ECC memory, which the i7 does not.

... If you don't want an embedded graphics processor, just get the E3-1271v3 -- although for the modest price difference I'd go with the 1276 "just in case".    There's no performance penalty, and no extra power consumption when the graphics isn't being used.
