14b No "spin down" for SandForce Driven SSDs Patriot Pyro

The other thing is that when the SSD is in standby (or spun down) it does stop reporting temperature.  Also, when the drive is woken up, the temperature is low and then increases once the drive is awake until it reaches steady state temperature.  I'm pretty sure my SSD was sleeping before.

I think in 6.0.1 standby mode still is not available for SSDs, right?

The question came up, IF a SSD does support standby and if that has any advantage for the user - which could only be power saving.

Looking into data sheets, there is indeed a different power consumption between "idle" and "standby/sleep" - depending on model it might not be too high. Example Samsung Evo:

http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/SSD/de/html/ssd850pro/specifications.html

Active Read (Average) : Max. 3.3W (1TB)
Active Write (Average) : Max. 3.0W (1TB)
Idle : Max. 0.4W
Device Sleep : 2mW

So the difference in this example is only approx 1/2 W.

Regardless of that, I personally agree to craigr and some others, that I would keep the setting and let the user decide, if or if not such mode should be used. I agree with NAS too, that "standby" or "sleep" is a better naming for that state (at least if it is a SSD).

Regarding the questions of users about "sleep for SSDs" it would be a siple line added to the (very nice!) help system/text.

I think this is pretty definitive now and 0.5W is not a lot but what if you have 24 SSDs it soon adds up.

My vote we get into this again.

Likewise, I'd like to see the "spin down" thing restored.  I've some older SSDs I'd like to add to UnRAID, but they suck 5W when active and 0.1W when "spun down".  I'd only want them active a few hours a week.  As it is, they use more than the 5TB Reds in my machine, so they sit on the shelf.

Put some code in 6.1-rc2 to handle spindown of non-rotational devices.  Since I don't have access to a large number of different vendor/model of SSD devices, please report back in this thread if it works for you and/or if any error messages coincident with SSD spinup/spindown show up in the syslog.  (After -rc2 released of course.)

I like the idea of using the term "standby" more in relation to disks. In fact we should give some thoughts to using smartctl terminology of IDLE, STANDBY and SLEEP more often.

LT did you give some thought to changing the wording based on above. I think it might make sense.

I think that would clear up some confusion about this.

I appologize for my ealier incredulity, I did not understand what you were requesting exactly or that this was even possible and I thinking of "spin down" in literal terms. Because this isn't a literal spin down I support the idea that the language should be different.
