June 18, 201511 yr and just today, initial setup from the webGui. There's no mention of the time(frame) needed for drives to format, in the video or the "getting started" page. Is there any reason why this is being omitted? Do you mean the time needed for formatting, which is not very much, or do you really mean the time needed to clear or preclear a drive? I blanked it as "format" as a new user is unlikely to be aware of "clearing" process. Therefore a new user "formatting" their drives would also result in a "clearing" process and that takes considerable amount of time (unless this has changed?).

Clearing is not required for a new array. It is only needed when expanding (adding a new disk to an existing array).

If you are truly setting up from scratch, clearing is unnecessary and not done. Parity is calculated and maintained from the current contents, no matter what they are. Clearing is only necessary when there is already a protected array in place that you wish to add a new member disk, in which case the new disk must be all zeros so as not to change the already calculated parity sums.
June 18, 201511 yr Thanks for the clarification, I was not aware of that when I first setup unraid many many years ago. Good work on the videos so far
