November 5, 201510 yr hi all, sorry for the caps but that is the mail i keep getting from my server when i'm trying to preclear a drive background: I had a 3tb drive that i noticed had a few errors in the last parity check. to be safe, i swapped it out for a new 6tb precleared drive, and build the old drive data onto that. seemed to go fine. I then proceeded to attempt to preclear the 3tb drive. the preclear cycle does the preread, the zeroing, but then immediately fails when the postread fails. I've attempted this twice, but it fails at the same point both times got this email: Zeroing Disk /dev/sdd Done. Zeroing Elapsed Time: 3:29:09 Total Elapsed Time: 9:39:16 Calculated Write Speed: 239 MB/s then 1 minutes later a second email Preclear Disk /dev/sdd FAILED!!!!. Any advice? i'm prepared to discard the drive if needed because all data is off, however I assumed i could run a preclear, and look at the results before deciding whether it was garbage
November 5, 201510 yr Run a long smart test (hours) and pull the smart report after the test completes.
November 5, 201510 yr Probably pretty rare, but I had post-read fail due to bad memory. In that case it completed the post-read and then reported that there were non-zeros on the disk.
November 6, 201510 yr Author ok running the long smart test through unmenu. i'm not sure where the output will be but i'll let it run
November 6, 201510 yr ok running the long smart test through unmenu. i'm not sure where the output will be but i'll let it run The output of a long smart test is saved to the drive's firmware (not precisely accurate, but close enough). You view the results by pulling a smart report from the drive after the test has completed
November 6, 201510 yr Author ok here is the output of the smart test. concerns i see is that is a very old drive (i was aware of this) but there are a huge number of reallocated sectors (25000) and there are still 8 current pending sectors. although two preclears failed, the zeroing completed, which should have fixed the current pending sectors? Feels like i should junk it? smart.txt
November 6, 201510 yr With over 25,000 reallocated sectors and 8 pendings I'd absolutely just junk it !! You're lucky you decided to replace it before it finally failed on you.
November 6, 201510 yr That drive is not usable in unRAID. it's a ticking timebomb for you to loose data. 5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 081 081 036 Pre-fail Always - 25328 187 Reported_Uncorrect 0x0032 001 001 000 Old_age Always - 3238 197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 8 198 Offline_Uncorrectable 0x0010 100 100 000 Old_age Offline - 8 ... I would'n't put that even NEAR my production array.
November 6, 201510 yr Author thanks to both for your feedback... there's a lesson here, which i assume is to check the health of the drives regularly. I do use the smart monitoring plugin in unmenu to check for critical problems, but i have lapsed on how often i check the issue first came up due to 6 errors in a parity check... then a couple of days later the errors just vanished from the gui! Very odd, but as the smart report shows, there were very serious probs with the drive it has been out of the array for a few days now, but will now remove completely from the server thanks for the feedback
