NEWEGG - HITACHI Deskstar HD32000 IDK/7K 2TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" - $169!!

argh, newegg.ca has it for $240 CDN (~$225 USD). Ah well. Good shopping my American friends! ;)

Your still lucky, around $237 US for that drive in the UK. $140 Us for a 7200 1.5TB, $120 for a 5400/5900 1.5TB, $85 US for a 7200 1TB.

Looks like 1TB is still the sweet spot in the UK, but only just.

I found the 750GB Hitachi Deskstars to be the hottest running drives BY FAR in my array. Hopefully these are cooler running.

On that note are there any reviews etc on this drive? Saw it yesterday and am tempted as a new parity drive...

Around here we call them 'Deathstars' .. not a good track record with the Hitachi or when they were IBM.

I'd go for it as a parity drive. With the number of Seagates & Western Digitals I've replaced lately I wouldn't worry about the Hitachi.

They did have a problem when IBM made them. Not always but towards the end. When Hitachi bought the IBM hard drive division things turned around. I have a Hitachi 320 gig ide running in my box. Runs cool & quiet. Haven't had a problem with it.

I have just recently retired but had a Computer business for years. I have installed several hundred of these "Deathstars" in the past for customers. Only had to replace very few. I wouldn't be scared of it.

Just remember ANY drive has the possibility of going bad...

P.S. OT but what happened to the spell check in the forums when you post a reply?

Not really worried about it's reliability etc - more its speed and seek times for parity...

I wonder how noisy they are, considering that they're using 5 platters to get to 2TB.

Fry's now has these for  $159.
