April 14, 201016 yr Ok, what about eSata? Does slackware support hot plugging eSata? That depends mostly on your hardware. Does my motherboard have to provide an eSata connector for it to be supported? If so, if I add a PCI card with an eSata connector should I expect that hot plugging would then work? In other words, what do I have to check or do to see if my hardware supports/or could support it?

April 14, 201016 yr Thanks Joe. April 15, 201016 yr I'm looking at this card and the chipset is SiliconImage SiI3132. Just look at the unraid kernel config and see if it has a module for that chipset enabled. Or just get the card and find out when you insert it and boot up.
April 15, 201016 yr I'm looking at this card and the chipset is SiliconImage SiI3132. Just look at the unraid kernel config and see if it has a module for that chipset enabled. That sounds promising. How/where is the kernal config?
April 15, 201016 yr It's in /usr/src/linux/.config for certain. Depending on the kernel options used, it may also be in: /proc/config.gz EDIT: It looks like unRAID 4.5.3 does not enable the reading of the .config file via /proc/config.gz [kernel option = CONFIG_IKCONFIG]

Depending on the kernel options used, it may also be in: /proc/config.gz EDIT: It looks like unRAID 4.5.3 does not enable the reading of the .config file via /proc/config.gz [kernel option = CONFIG_IKCONFIG] All I found was these. Doing a google search took me to a linux database where the particular driver is mentioned. I can assume y means yes it's supported. What does m mean? And is there any better way to look them up than to do google search on each one? CONFIG_ATA_ACPI=y CONFIG_SATA_PMP=y CONFIG_SATA_AHCI=m CONFIG_SATA_SIL24=m CONFIG_ATA_SFF=y CONFIG_SATA_SVW=m CONFIG_ATA_PIIX=m CONFIG_SATA_MV=m CONFIG_SATA_NV=m # CONFIG_PDC_ADMA is not set # CONFIG_SATA_QSTOR is not set CONFIG_SATA_PROMISE=m # CONFIG_SATA_SX4 is not set CONFIG_SATA_SIL=m CONFIG_SATA_SIS=m CONFIG_SATA_ULI=m CONFIG_SATA_VIA=m # CONFIG_SATA_VITESSE is not set CONFIG_SATA_INIC162X=m
April 15, 201016 yr "Y" means compiled into the kernel. "M" means compiled as a loadable module. "# _ is not set" means it's not enabled.

April 15, 201016 yr Thanks Joe. I'm looking at this card and the chipset is SiliconImage SiI3132. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816132020 I'm thinking I'll use this simple dock. StarTech SATADOCK22UE http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16817707170 I've got a fan in the cabinet so I'll just aim it at the doc to keep them cool. Many people use SiliconImage SiI3132 based cards.
