Would this CPU be enough

Featured Replies

I am wondering if the AMD Sempron cpu would be enough for unraid.

Here is the link:

I am thinking of either the Sempron or this one:

AMD Athlon II X2 245 Dual Core

Also, is 2Gb RAM more than enough or do I need 4Gb RAM?

Thx

I'm running the sempron 140 with 2Gb ram on mine and it seems fine.

That second one may be an overkill. The first one you point to is a 2.7GHz CPU /w 1MB L2 cache, and that should be plenty.

For comparison, my unRAID server has 10TB of storage, and is powered by a ultra-low-viltage mobile processor at 1GHz, without L2 cache, and with 1GB RAM. It's working perfectly. (see my icon)

Edit: The CPU is a Pentium M Dothan 723 with a TDP of 5 W.  ;)

I'm also running the Sempron 140.  Its relatively low power at 45 W, but nothing close to 5 W!  That's a really sweet setup, Purko.  I've never seen a case like that before, what is it?  Maybe you have an entry in the Pimp My Rig thread, I'll check there.

Okay, this REALLY caught my attention.  Why oh why would I use a 135W Q6600 when I could use a 5W Dothan?  I searched through the pimp thread and can only find your AMD system in there.  Would you mind terribly giving us some links and pics of your setup?

Intel's new Atom N450 chips look like they might be the thing I'm looking for...

http://www.coolcomputing.com/article.php?sid=3495

While not as low as 5 watts, my high performance Intel dual-core 2.4Ghz cpu draws 25 watts while supporting hardware virtualization! The entire system runs under 63 watts during a parity check. Intel also has some newer CPU models that are under 17 watts. Full details in this thread: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=4212.msg37177#msg37177.

I don't have any post in that thread.

It's the NORCO's NS-520.  I didn't build it, it came like that, all set up and ready to go.

It cost me $299.  All I had to do is add a stick of RAM, and add the hard disks.

You can see all pictires of it here:

http://habeyusa.com/StorageArray/ns520/NS-52000z.jpg

The specs can be seen here:

http://www.norco.com.cn/en/Storage%20Array/NS-520.htm.

One sweet thing about it is that it has 3 eSata ports for further expansion.

You can end up with a 20-disk unRAID server with this thing. (w/ port multiplier)

Now that I filled up all the 5 disks in the NS-520, I bought another box from NORCO, the DS-5xx..something:

It looks exactly like the NS-520, only it's just a 5-disk eSata enclosure, and it cost me $95.

I hooked its eSata cable to one of the eSata ports of the NS-520, and now I have 5 more disks in my unRAID. ;)

Purko

and where did you buy that norco -520 ?

I was looking for something similar and ended up with a supermicro superserver 5035

http://www.supermicro.com/products/system/tower/5035/SYS-5035L-I.cfm

since my first build was too slow doing parity (>1300 minutes)

crammed the same 6 drives in

I willl probably add another 2 when i get a 4 port pcie card to replace my promise 4310

I did the same thing! heh! Now if I could find another 5 drive chassis I would be happy. I would have an emergeny backup environment should my larger one fail.

Thats the CPU I use. Its plenty of power for normal unraid usage. Here are some CPU usages I've observed...

6% when streaming movies.

11% for my Subsonic music transcoding.

25% when writing to my Truecrypt disk

100% using handbrake video encoding with ~10 fps

I've encoded a movie (100%) while having 5 music streams going and the music streams never skipped a beat.

I'm still bouncing around the idea of a dual or quad core to encode video faster. I may run a VM server in the future which will require a little more power.

Hopefully quick question, do you know which port-multiplier it uses and if it's FIS or Command-Based port multiplier?

The guy upped the price a bit, but it's still worth it.

(I bought an enclosure from him about two months ago)

Will looking at my syslog answer your question?

If you think so, then I'll post a syslog when I get back home later.

Thanks for the link. I like this device since I already have the hard drives. Most NAS units sell with HDD's and that really increases the price. Was thinking of using this as my off-site backup and just use rsync.

What software does this unit run?

Is it possible to use different size drives?

Can you run it in a non-raid configuration?

Will NTFS drives work?

Unless I'm mistaken, it does not run any software.  It is an external case, fan, and power supply with a built-in port multiplier card that must be used with a compatible internal SATA controller.

Is it possible to use different size drives?

Depends on the operating system used.

Can you run it in a non-raid configuration?

depends on the operating system used

Will NTFS drives work?

depends on the operating system used.  They cannot be assigned to an array slot in unRAID and be NTFS... but MS-Windows might not care.

Exactly.

I used this eSATA enclosure to add 5 more disks to my NS-520 unRAID server.

The NS-520 has 3 built-in eSATA ports, so I can add two more such enclosures to it.

Thanks Joe.

I'm tossing around the idea of having my off-site drives in some enclosure for nightly rsync. Thought the ebay item was some sort of NAS without drives. Sorry for going off topic.

Thought the ebay item was some sort of NAS without drives.

The "NAS without drives" is ~$300.

Weebo, I first heard about the NS-520 from you.

And I bought mine following a link you posted in some old thread.

hahahaha, I was wondering where there might still be a link get it for $300.

That link has since expired and I know it's actually a pricey unit.

A quick e-bay search revealed more units ("new") at $300.

Different merchant name than the one I bought from, this one with less feedback.

Purko, just curious, is the board in that box mini-ITX, or proprietary?
