How painful is it to move to a new case and motherboard?

Featured Replies

I have a working system on a compact case with MicroITX board and 6 HDs. With the compact case, I've made tradeoffs in airflow.

I'm moving to a new place soon where I can put the server in the basement and don't have the same space constraints so want to "upgrade" to a larger case with more airflow and more space to expand drives.

This wouldn't be a problem if I was moving the motherboard and HDs together.  However, I think i'll want to also upgrade my motherboard so i have more mobo connections for more hard drives in future.

How painful is it to move drives and flash drive to a new system with a new motherboard?

Usually it's plug and play, always good to take a screen shot of current array assignments just in case.

So Slackware will be ok with a switch to a new motherboard? Do I have to worry about the order the drives are plugged into the new mobo or disks handled by device ID/serial# making connection order moot?

unRAID identifies disks by serial number, order and controller are irrelevant.

FYI the device names sda, sdb, etc. will potentially change, but that's immaterial due to the serial number identification.

I've been thru a couple of motherboard and processor upgrades. It is as easy as plugging in the existing USB stick and making sure the new setup boots from it.

One minute later and you are back in business  :)

I've had 3 CPU/Motherboards and 2 cases and never any issues. Always just booted up and worked as if nothing had changed.

Some of my original hardware is now my backup server, including my older, smaller disks since I don't do a complete backup.
