My motherboard has ran out of SATA ports, which SATA Controller do I get?

Featured Replies

My motherboard, see my signature, has run out of it's 6 SATA ports. Now, I would like to add another HDD to my array, which SATA controller or similar do I get for my UnRAID setup?

Thanks in advance!

What expansion slots do you have free and how many disks do you think you might want to add in the mid to long term? Take a look here and here, though some of the information is a little dated.

For a simple two port controller that fits a PCIe x1 slot the SYBA/IOCREST SY-PEX40039 is not a bad choice.

Err, isn't the E3C226D2I a mini-ITX board with a single PCIex slot?  And it looks like you have a GPU in it...  A SATA controller would go in the PCIex slot.

You could use a USB 3 port to add an external disk.

Indeed, I barely use the GPU anyways. I'll pop that one out. It is a single PCIe 3.0 x16 slot.

Which SATA controller is recommended for usage with unraid?

Thanks. :)

??  The specs in the OP's sig show an HD4600 GPU => this is the on-chip controller; NOT a separate video card

There are a lot of good choices.  With an x16 slot you could add anywhere from a 2-port controller (inexpensive) to a 24-port controller (well over $1000).  You need to decide how many total ports you want to add.  I'd recommend a nice 4-port controller, since you have plenty of PCIe lanes available and can use an x2 card.

This would work nicely:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816124060

There was a card in there as well when first posted (EVA GT710 or something?).  I guess it's now gone, as in the post above yours.

That explains the post about it => I thought perhaps the card listed in the 2nd system had been mistakenly associated with the server.

Yeah, the OP originally had a GPU in there for pass-through VM usage and has since updated their signature.

To the OP - your signature doesn't mention your case, how many drive bays do you have available and how many additional drives could you see adding to the array?  Gary mentioned a good 4 port card but there are other options available if you need to accommodate more drives.
