Plex standalone media server or Plex and media downloader?

Featured Replies

Greetings,

I have an unraid system running PMS and I have been thinking about playing around with CP, Sonarr, etc...are there any cons to running them on the same system? Would it be better to run it on another system and copy files over to Plex or would that just be a waste of resources...

I do not want to introduce any possible stability problems to a media server that is working very well.

just looking for opinions.

Cheers!

Only issue would be if you have a lower powered server and Plex tries to transcode while the download agent is busy.

It's very common to combine those functions all on one server.  As METDeath mentioned, though, make sure you have enough resources available.

Compared to CP, Sonarr, Sabnbzd, etc - Plex is by far the biggest user of CPU cycles if it is transcoding for you.  If your server can handle Plex transcoding fairly well, it can very likely handle the CPU load of the other applications.  Plex doesn't use lots of memory, though.  At various times I've seen Sab, SickRage, or Sonarr grab a bunch of RAM.  So if you want to run them you'll need some RAM available.  It really depends on your current unRAID machine configuration.

my server currently is running an AMD A8 5600 cpu, 16gb ram, 3 4tb red drives (1 parity and 2 data), and a 500gb SSD for a cache drive.

so it should probably have sufficient resources.

is there an up-to-date setup/best practice guide for CP and Sonarr (preferably connecting to deluge...unless another client is recommended)?

Thanks!

As long as you aren't trying to transcode more than two streams at once AND get busy with torrent/newsgroup downloads your CPU will be fine.

This CPU has (only) 4800 Passmark points - good for 2x 1080p transcoding at Plex, but not more  ;)

Use the Community Applications plugin to review the various Docker versions of CP, Sonarr, etc - you'll find that multiple people/groups have produced them over time.  Pick a well supported one like Linuxserver.io or Binhex.  The support thread for each Docker (linked in CA) should have setup recommendations.

May I ask a plex specific Q?

Dont mean to hijack the tread, just want to know, how/where Plex stores it's data (covers, etc).

Are they placed in the docker container in a specific directory or in the file directory?

Is it possible to set Plex to "no transcoding"?

Did you know, that Plex offers an unRAID specific download?

If you are using Docker, Plex uses a folder structure located in the appdata share (locate on the cache drive or the array) to store metadata, database and other stuff. If folder mappings are correctly setup nothing should be stored within the container.

Transcoding is negotiated between the server and the client and transcoding is used if needed to play the content. Haven’t seen any possibility to disable it on the server but some clients can be set to disable transcoding.

You want to try and force Direct Play/Direct Stream.  I haven't tried it since my combination of media/devices usually needs transcoding.  Plex used to have a setting for this but I think they removed it...  You can turn it on and off, but I don't think you can force it any longer.

Thanks so far.

What about the scraper?

MiniDLNA is sort of a pita when it comes to this point.

My server is shut down during night times and at each start-up

it will do some database verification/updating that takes a couple of minutes.

What is Plex's behavior?

I don't put my server to sleep, but I'd guess that you have Plex set to update its libraries nightly.  When it wakes up the update is probably queued and waiting.

Plex can also be set to scan media folders when changes are detected so things can get added very quickly.
