December 14, 201114 yr The other benefit of IPMI is you can see the hardware status. FAN RPM, CPU Temperature, Remote power, etc, etc. But if $100 is your budget, then I don't have any recommendations. maybe someone is looking to upgrade and you could get a used deal for that budget.
December 15, 201114 yr I've been thinking about this a bit more, and I also need to replace my SATA controller (it never worked on this motherboard), so if I could find a board that had LOTS of SATA connections, and this feature, the cost/benefit comes back into the "reasonable" range for me. The board you linked to only has 6 SATA ports, and I haven't looked any further yet, but had another question, so thought I'd ask everything at one time. Is anyone aware of a board with this feature, that also has 8+ sata ports? preferably 1/2 or more being SATA3? Also, the board you pointed out looks like it actually has 3 NIC's on it Intel® 82579LM and 82574L, 2x Gigabit LAN ports Virtual Machine Device Queues High efficient I/O overhead Supports 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, and 1000BASE-T, RJ45 output 1x Realtek RTL8201N PHY (dedicated IPMI) 2 Gigabit LAN, and another for IPMI. I was originally going to ask if the IPMI would need it's own connection, and it seems to be the case from the info above, but I'd like confirmation, just to be sure. Also, is the Realtek RTL8210N currently well supported in unRAID, or is it one of the 'difficult' ones not fully working yet?
December 15, 201114 yr Disclaimer: newbie here. However, I have the Supermicro X8SIL-F MoBo,which also has 2 Gigabit LAN ports and a dedicated IPMI port. I have never been able to connect through the IPMI port, I just have my network attached to LAN1 and it works fine for both streaming and connecting to the server (IPMI). I'm sure there's some simple way to get the dedicated port working, but I don't see the need right now. Also, in this location I don't have a spare network connection to attach to both ports anyway. Is there really a benefit to having both connections at the same time on differ ports rather than both through the same port?
