My cache drive size is 250gb ssd, do I need bigger

Featured Replies

I have a Samsung 250Gb SSD. It's used fir a couple of VMs and I have around 130gb spare for my download folder, torrents.

Is it normal to need to upgrade this to a 500gb, it's just it runs low most the time.

Is a 500gb cache normal or excessive, or can I utilise the 250gb better.

Totally dependent on your usage. If you need more space, you need more space.

I sometimes move 2TB at a time to an archive server I have at work - so I have a 2TB SSD for cache (and a 10GbE connection).  If you're not moving more data than your cache device(s) will handle, there's no improvement to be offered for you there.

If you use your cache drive for other things like docker images or VMs and the like, you need to have enough space for all those uses as well as the largest amount of data you may wish to transfer to your array at a time.

So can i use this current 250Gb SSD for VMs ?   How do i do this, keep it as an unassigned device?

I can then then purchase a 500GB SD as the Cache

If you wish to add space instead of redundancy to the cache pool by adding another drive, you can, but not automatically.

BTRFS allows different RAID levels, by default unraid selects RAID1 which ensures each bit of data is stored on 2 physical devices. To change that requires a little bit of tweaking.
