I normally have my server running all the time

Is it running all the time or is it set-up to go to sleep?

You posted earlier in the thread that you had problems with 4.5.3 and the S3 sleep and WOL yet you claim the server is running all the time. If you want to figure out the problem then first disable the extras you have added. If it works fine then add them back one at a time until you find the problem add-on.

I have not added ANY additional items - just plain vanilla UNRAID

It is running all the time as in it is powered on and UNRAID OS is running.

UNRAID spins down some hard drives when they are not accessed for awhile.

Ok guys - Unix Newbie I have taken the output from all the commands and saved to files however when I ftp into the machine it does not let me CD to root where the files are located.

BTW even when the user shares do not work - you can see them. At first you can click on them and a blank folder appears. Now when you click on the user share folders you get a network error. However the disk shares all are still fully functional.

This command returns an error:

cp /var/log/messages /boot/config/msgs.log

No such file or directory

When I check in /var/log I do not see a messages file in this directory

Also notice that the server is very slow when accessing files via disk shares

  • Author

Ok a stop / start sometimes does not fix the problem.

A full reboot is required.

The web gui is active.

Disk Shares are working.

But performance of the server is very slow prior to reboot.

Did you get to try the command I suggested earlier when the shares disappear?

smbclient -N -L localhost

It will let you know which shares are being advertised by your server.

I did - all the shares are being advertised. I can map to those shares. Just nothing appears when I do map to them. Blank - nothing.

Have you managed to get the output of the previous commands off of the server yet?

I ran the commands but I do not know where the files are to post them on this forum. Could someone please give me a bit more instructions.

I ran the commands and piped them into files.

But I am not sure where in the file structure the files are and how to ftp them out of there to my pc to post them onto the forum.

Help please.

/boot/config is on your flash drive. so \\tower\flash\config will get you there.

I'm guessing

cp /var/log/messages /boot/config/msgs.log

should be:

cp /var/log/dmesg /boot/config/msgs.log

but I could be wrong.

Ah my bad on that, as a full Slackware system uses /var/log/messages. I forgot that unRAID may have this set up differently.

Sorry folks been out on vacation for a couple of weeks.

I am going to try going to 4.5.6 to see if all these problems just go away. Shall keep all updated.

Problem seems to have gone away with 4.5.6.

<<crosses fingers>>

Nope problem is still there the shares disappear.

msgs.log and sys.log are attached.

Any help in figuring this out is appreciated.

When I run smbclient -N -L localhost

It shows all Sharenames

When I map to the sharename there are no files.

When I map to the drive share disk1 or disk2 etc the files are there and I can read/write/modify

running plain vanila UNRAID - NO add ons or plugins or anything.

free returns:

Memory

total 514840

used 508420

free 6420

shared 0

buffers 49284

cached 351284

Swap

total 0

used 0

free 0

I don't know how to capture the output from ps -ef

I know how to pipe it to a file but I have no idea where the file is! Sorry for being such a Newb.

sys.txt

msgs.txt

I have also noticed that streaming a file from one disk on the tower while copying content from another disk on the tower to a local usb drive seems to make everything go broke. Copy stalls. The stream hiccups. And the tower and the PC I was using for this are on the same wired 100baseT network. When copying only I am getting 9.7MB/second.

Is it that my hardware is just not sufficient to handle the demands of the new 2TB data drive and the 2TB parity drive I installed? All these problems are after I installed the 2TB drives.

Anyone? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry to ask a Weard question but what chipset are you running?

I had a similar thing happen with a geforce8200 chipset. It took me two weeks to give up and get an other motherboard. Only diffrence is that the Unraid marked all files as read only...... Kind of wieard but once i used the new motherboard all was good. Have you tryed the newest bios for the mother board and or disk controlers? ???;D

The shares appeared all by them selves. No restart, no reboot. This can not be a hardware issue!

Can anyone help?

I will look up the chipset and post - its ancient hardware.

AND now the shares are gone again! Nothing has been done on the server. No reset, no power down, not even a serious copy of data.

NOTHING!!!!

I am very confused as to what the heck is going on?

Is there away or necessity to rebuild the USB key? Without loosing my data?

The presence (and absence) of shared drives on the lan is all managed by the "master browser"  One of your PCs probably is handling that role, and then perhaps being turned off????

Do a google search on "master browser" and see if it will give you some insight.  (it has nothing to do with the web-browser)

There is a whole thread discussing the same subject here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=3762.0

For all you know, a neighbor's PC might be connecting wirelessly to your non-password protected router, taking over as "master browser" and then leaving you with no "master browser" when they turn off their PC when they are done mooching off your internet connection.    (Or it could be your own laptop or PC which is taking over the role, and then going away when you turn it off)

Joe L.

You can also set the unRAID server to be the Master Browser on the Settings page.  It certainly wouldn't hurt anything to try it, even if it doesn't end up solving your problem.

My Network is secured, encryption, passwords changed etc.

I will look up this master browser concept - thanks for the info.

Thank you!
