You need permission from TOWER/nobody to make changes to this file (SOLVED)

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

After extensive Googling and searching in this forum, I am at loss how to resolve my problem.

Here is the issue I am having: When browsing to a share in Windows explorer I can see my files, but I cannot delete or modify files.  I receive an error stating "You need permission from TOWER/nobody to make changes to this file".

I am not certain when the issue started as I have directories which are now several years old and I seldom have had to go into these directories, so the issue may have been present for a while now.  I have no problem reading the files, however I cannot add new files, delete existing files, or modify existing files to any of these older directories.  So I'm essentially at Read-Only permissions with these directories.  I can create a new directory in any of the shares, and have full permissions for files in the newly created directories.  The problem exists within shares and accessing the files on the individual disk drives.

What I have done to try and address the issue:

  1. I rebooted everything, windows pc, tower, router.
  2. I upgraded to the most recent version of unRaid 6.3.5.
  3. I ran the new users permissions tool.

The first 2 items made no noticeable impact.  After running the new users permissions tool, I now have the problem across every directory under my /mnt/user directory.  When I look at the files under SSH I see them listed as "-rw-rw-rw- 1 nobody users      845059 Dec 26  2014 disc.png" (using the file disc.png as an example, all files have the same permissions.  Also if I SSH into TOWER, and try to rename any of the files or directories, I receive the error "failed: Read-only file system".  When I view the securities properties in Windows I see that the permissions are set to Read and Write for Everyone, users, and nobody.

I am running unRaid version 6.3.5 with shares.  My shares are all set to public. I am running windows 7 (Home Premium Edition 64-bit Service pack 1).

If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Post your diagnostics

Here is my most recent diagnostics.  I recently rebooted, but tried modifying a file so that it would show up in the syslog.

Thanks

After running reiserfsck --check /dev/md4 it recommended rebuilding the tree, so I backed up the entire drive, rebuilt the tree and everything seems back to normal.  The entire process took a few days since it was a 3TB drive.

I wanted to thank you both for your help with this!

Start your own thread and provide all of the details and be sure to post up your diagnostics file in that new thread.
