Smart status errors?

Featured Replies

I have 2 disks with smart status reports:

- disk 1 says: current pending sector 196 click for context menu

- disk 4 says current pending sector 88, offline uncorrectable 8 click for context menu

what does it mean?

It means you might have two failing disks, run an extended SMART test on both.

Disk 4's report shows that it failed the test with a read error. You need to replace it. Disk 1 passed the test and might be reliable enough to allow you to rebuild disk 4, assuming you have single parity. Disk 4's (sorry, I meant disk 1's) SMART report would give some indication of its health. If you have dual parity then you can rebuild disk4 without needing disk1 to be readable. In fact, with dual parity I would simply replace both disks 1 and 4.

Yes, sorry. I meant you should post disk 1's latest SMART report. I've updated my original post. Also confirm whether you have single or dual parity. In fact, post your diagnostics zip then we won't have to guess.

No, it means the test had 90% left to go when it failed, that disk should be replaced ASAP.

lol yes you said that

but what to do with it then

garbage?

It depends if you have any use for a bad disk.

I like to take them apart and play with the very powerful magnets.

If you have someone you are not fond of and wish to cause them grief you could give it to them.

Using it will cause data loss, sooner rather than later.

Take it apart and play with the strong magnets, they can be quite fun (and painful if not careful)

use it as cache lol

Dang it, sniped!

As long as you don't mind losing data that's on it, sure.

or wait till it completely crashes?

No. Any disk with problems puts data at risk since all bits on all other disks must be reliable in order to rebuild a disk. Parity alone cannot reconstruct data without all other disks.

You really need to be working toward replacing both disks sooner rather than later.

Disk 1 already makes rebuild of disk4 uncertain, and vice versa.
