andrewpercival
Hey guys, I was given a few Xeon 5660 processors from a friend the other day and 128gb of memory he told me he salvaged from an old server. Just curious if this is worth trying to build around. It's a little older so I wasn't sure if it was worth spending time looking for parts for the rest of a build. Thanks in advance. Random.Name
Well the cpu is dirt cheap but there are a lot of dual socket motherboards out there that fit it. So you could just grab a second one and a motherboard an build a decent system. i have dual 5640s and 96GB of Ram and my server seems to be running fine. it really depends on how much you would pay for a second 5660 and a dual socket motherboard 1 Quote Link to comment

Especially when considering the RAM price for building new systems. 1 Quote Link to comment
hitman2158
You can get following MoBo on Ebay for roughly 100€: https://www.ebay.de/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=Supermicro+X8DTL-iF&_sacat=0 Supermicro X8DTL-iF, see detailed info http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/QPI/5500/X8DTL-iF.cfm Try to get the right RAM for it But be aware that this will end up in expensive costs for energy 1 Quote Link to comment
andrewpercival
Thanks, guys, I have multiple processors so that's not an issue and a tonne of match ECC 1333 ram. Any other suggestions for boards, I'm not seeing a lot available for sale in canada. Thanks again! Quote Link to comment
