The Linux ‘file’ command from the CLI should allow you to identify the type (I.e. extension) for these files.    It will not help with the name of the file but at least knowing the type is a start to deciding what to do next.

I think the issue was the USB and the ports.  It seems to not recognize the USB unless it is plugged in with a little force and quickness.  I cant just gently put it in the USB.  

Well of course if there is good electrical connections then quickness and force won't have any effect. Sounds like some sort of issue like maybe a bad solder joint on the connector or something else which is causing intermittent problems with some electrical connection.
