October 21, 201015 yr so how much space is really needed? the reason I ask, is because the 4gb I bought just for unRAID wont boot... a 4gb flash I had just laying about (that I forgot I had) wont boot... my tried & true trusty 256mb Sandisk liquid metal cruzer drive boots just fine and dandy... is 256mb big enough to actually get a license assigned to it? or will I be screwed in a week when some 1gb application/addon comes along? actually, are there any current addons/versions/anything that really need more then the recommended 128mb?
October 21, 201015 yr according to this page in the wiki: http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Hardware_Compatibility#USB_Flash_Drives 128mb are enough for the basic version but 512 are recommended. in my stick i have installed many packages and unraid only occupies 106 mb i dont know about the size of the upcoming unraid 5, though... (still, the unzipped unraid 5 folder is lessthan 60 mb)
October 21, 201015 yr I use a 4GB SanDisk Cruzer and haven't had any issues with it. You can always use the 256MB, and then request a transfer of your license if you ever outgrow it.
October 21, 201015 yr Author thanks for the feed back... not sure what direction I will go... but its nice to know there are options...
October 21, 201015 yr Are you absolutely positive that both of those 4GB flash drives won't work? Have you tried nuking them with the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool before sysing them? That thing tends to do wonders.
October 21, 201015 yr Author no, I am not sure of anything at this point I will try the HP tool when I get home from work today... assuming the preclear thingy is done... that sure seems to take awhile... have 4 instances of it running... 2T, 1T and 2x 500G... the 500G's seemed almost done this morning... the 2T and 1T were still on step 2 I think...
October 22, 201015 yr Also try formatting the drive as FAT and FAT32. Some BIOS do not understand one or the other on drives that large. I am not sure on the exact settings but the flash drive in my test server is an 8GB drive that i have no problem booting. I think i did nuke it with the HP format tool but I am not sure if it is FAT or FAT32 formatted.
October 22, 201015 yr Author well, I tried the HP util on both my 4G flashes, did one as FAT one as FAT 32, neither worked...
October 22, 201015 yr well, I tried the HP util on both my 4G flashes, did one as FAT one as FAT 32, neither worked... The only other thing you can try is doing a google search specifically related to your motherboard and booting from a USB flash drive. What motherboard are you using, do you have the latest BIOS, what settings are available for booting from USB in the BIOS, and what error do you see when you can't boot?

Additionaly, maybe check if the usb boots any other pcs
October 22, 201015 yr Author I don't think my mother board is the issue, partly cause its a supermicro X7SPE... that board is great btw... and secondly, I have been playing with it and unRAID using my trusty 256MB Sandisk cruzer drive... the sandisk just worked... only problem is its only 256MB... anyone try a micron 2GB Real SSD eUSB drive? does it have the proper ID stuff? will it actually boot? or I might just stop at best buy or some place on my way home from work and get a 4GB Sandisk... just because so far, sandisk seems to work...
October 22, 201015 yr Author or I could just give up and order the 2GB pre-setup drive from Limetech... how long does it take Limetech to ship generally? are the faster at their shipping then they are with their beta building?
October 22, 201015 yr I run on a Kingston data traveller 256MB usb key, works fine and dandy. I have current and last stable release on the drive, several plugins and utilities and it comes to 160MB. So only @60% with two version on the drive. 5.0 is currently around the same size.
October 23, 201015 yr Author well, got the eUSB to work... but that was a bit of a pain... my desktop is a gaming MB, they didn't really arrange the usb headers in a way that made installing an eUSB easy... also found that it was a BIOS issue with both my 4GB flashes... go figure... the Sandisk worked fine every time... but the 4GB (and the eUSB) if they are ever removed and the box rebooted with them gone, I need to go back and add them to the boot option again...
