NAS
I use SATA desktop caddies all the time and they are great. But I have always been on the hunt for a version that fits in a 5.25" bay preferably with a fan. Surely this product exists? Anyone seen one? Link to comment
abs0lut.zer0
what about one of these...? http://www.icydock.com/goods_cat.php?id=45 Link to comment
NAS
The problem is USB is the only reliable means i have found to umount a disk without having to reboot Link to comment
Rajahal
I've used two of these for a while in my main desktop: Mobile Rack for 3.5 inches SATA HDD - Open Frame Again, not USB, but Win7 supports hot swapping of SATA and eSATA drives. So my boot SSD is installed internally, then my data drives I can hot swap at will. You just have to eject the drive as you would a flash drive, like so (I only have one data drive installed at the moment): Link to comment
NAS
Very interesting but these disks are swapped between XP, Debian and Ubuntu. I have had nothing but grief any time i have tried anything other that USB USB just works. Link to comment
queeg
Try using the unit Raj suggested but connect it to an hot pluggable port or esata port. Then to make it painless to mount in unRAID just install SNAP. I have several of these usb enclosures and they have lasted for years with daily use. The fans are silent. I have two connected by esata and one using the usb connection to my Dish Network box. Link to comment
NAS
I am really not keen to go the sata or eSATA route. I have tried it in the past and found it very problematic Link to comment
WeeboTech
I have this. It's trayless, USB and eSATA. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816215055 The pictures do not show it, but you can swap the hard drive out without tools. Link to comment
