VM not passing through graphics card without any changes

Hi all

Strange one, my docker image corrupted last Saturday and since then my VM refuses to work. I was on 6.8.0-rc7 as I have Ryzen 3700x and a Vega 56 and thought it wise to wait for 6.9 to continue with the latest kernel and all was working well. I then had the docker image get corrupted so after rebuilding this and rebooting my server a few times I couldn't get my VM to work. The graphics switches over from the Unraid OS to the VM, I get output of a few lines of colour on the screen and it then the monitor goes to standby. I've tried quite a few things to get it working, these are:

Recreated VM

Tried i440fx (I use Q35 generally)

Tried with 1 core passthrough

Tried with everything but the VM passed through (This works)

Confirmed the GPU is not faulty by booting unraid in GUI mode

Upgraded to 6.8 to see if the old kernel gets it working

Changed the Vega pass through XML to be multi-function and ensuring the audio is on the same bus

But no luck... Any ideas?

XML, this is the current one with the multifunction settings but that made no difference anyway:

@J89eu Try to change the bus of the GPU audio to the same as the GPU graphics in the xml view.

from bus='0x04'

    <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'>
      <driver name='vfio'/>
      <source>
        <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x2b' slot='0x00' function='0x1'/>
      </source>
      <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x04' slot='0x00' function='0x1'/>
    </hostdev>

to bus='0x03'

    <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'>
      <driver name='vfio'/>
      <source>
        <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x2b' slot='0x00' function='0x1'/>
      </source>
      <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x03' slot='0x00' function='0x1'/>
    </hostdev>

Somehow there is an error reported from libvirt for that line. Might be caused by the aditional "Creative Labs Sound Core3D" sound card using the same bus.

I don't suppose anyone has any further suggestions for this? I've been testing and the only other thing I've found that could help with a fix is that I usedto be able to kill the Vega passthrough from the reboot bug using Spaceinvader One's script but that no longer works. It's this script modified to my GPU and audio https://drive.google.com/file/d/1TnY_kP4HwQykv0crbHeCFa9quX1KXxWO/view?usp=sharing

just looking at your features i see that the vendor name is set to 'none', and the hypervisor state is not set to hidden.

try something like this

Quote

<features>
    <acpi/>
    <apic/>
    <hyperv>
      <relaxed state='on'/>
      <vapic state='on'/>
      <spinlocks state='on' retries='8191'/>
      <vendor_id state='on' value='whatever'/>
    </hyperv>
    <kvm>
      <hidden state='on'/>
    </kvm>
    <vmport state='off'/>
  </features>

did me a world of good when i hid the hyper v and changed vendor name to 'whatever', seriously :)

also are you using the vnc card for windows installation? or the passthrough output of your gpu?

made a diffrence for me when i used the dissplay connected to the gpu that i passed through.

Sorry I didn't see this post for some reason but I tried this and sadly no luck... I did also try updating to 6.8.2 and still the same... I haven't been able to use my VM for a month now :(

This is essentially where I got to with the edits and still getting nowhere, current things I notice when powering on the VM is that I get screen output (5 or so lines down the screen) for about 1 second then the monitor goes into power saving mode and the 1st CPU thread that is passed through gets stuck at 100%

So further to this I've tried with an NVS510 GPU instead of the Vega and dumped the VBIOS, switches to the GPU and then the monitor goes off.. No lines on the screen this time, just goes off. I am at my wits end with this, I've not been able to use my VM for 2 months now

Have you run memtest?

Have you done anything to rule out the possibility of hardware failure (e.g. your motherboard / CPU) being the problem?

Have you tried the custom kernel with the Vega / Navi patch included?

Things usually don't suddenly stop working. Especially in your case, things-stopped-working was precluded with a corrupted docker image.

Data corruption (without accompanying drive failure / error) usually points at RAM issue (or CPU issue e.g. problem with a pin connecting to the memory controller).

I think we have ruled out all of the usual suspects so we kinda have to look at more extreme causes.

Perhaps use a trial license of Unraid on another computer to see if you can pass through your Vega or not. Or something like that.

Hi testdasi, thanks for taking the time to reply;

I have not yet run a memtest, I will do this.

Hardware/CPU failure, though a possibility, I see no other symptoms of this, the rest of the server works fine, including the GPU when in GUI mode

I am not aware of a custom kernel with Vega / Navi patch, I will do some searching and install this!

The data corruption issue was, I believe, an issue with V6.7, it was actually Unraid that told me this on the Docker settings page, it recommended I recreate before it corrupted itself, I didn't do this in time and low and behold it did corrupt, of course, I cannot be certain that this was the case for me, it certainly wouild point at that issue

Trial license on another system may be an issue, I have friends that I have had switch to Unraid after me praising it that I could ask to test the GPU but not sure if there PSU's can power it, I will ask.

Intrigued with the custom kernel though!

Thanks again for the reply! Really appreciate it.

So I've tested the GPU in another machine, all fine, I've ran a Memtest, all fine. I've actually insatlled Win10 on the hardware and gamed on it, no problem. This leads me to think the hardware is all good... Still not sure what the Navi/Vega thing is so again I'm at a road block!

Did you try @testdasi suggestion of trying to run  unraid trial on a new usb and then setting up a new VM and passing through the video card? Is this the only video card in the system?

Hardware seems fine, but lets eliminate the usb stick or a setting on your current unraid config as the issue.

Grab another copy of the vBIOS, and try that. That single cpu 100% is similar to what I used to get when I was using a bad BIOS on my Nvidia 1070 passed through. After dumping the vBIOS from the card from inside unRaid that issue cleared up for me.

Thanks Chess, currently trying a new USB stick but getting 169 addresses which the forum seems to suggest could be a dodgy USB stick so I've got a brand new one being delivered today to hopefully get around that..

It is the only card in the system

vBIOS, I've tried 6 different ones and dumping my own and the same issue.. Some don't even allow the GPU to pass through at all!

Hi again

Tried with a fresh USB key and exact same issue!

Argh! I was hoping that would work

I updated to the 6.9 Beta 1 today and had a bit of progress, for a moment. I managed to use the user script below:

#!/bin/bash

echo "disconnecting amd graphics"
echo "1" | tee -a /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000\:2b:\00.0/remove
echo "disconnecting amd sound counterpart"
echo "1" | tee -a /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000\:2b:\00.1/remove
echo "entered suspended state press power button to continue"
echo -n mem > /sys/power/state
echo "reconnecting amd gpu and sound counterpart"
echo "1" | tee -a /sys/bus/pci/rescan
echo "AMD graphics card sucessfully reset"

Which then put the machine into standby. I then created a new VM with base setup, just added in the GPU and the GPU sound card and it started...

Then I stopped it, added in the NVMe drive and I've never got it working again.. During that testing a disk went out of the array so that's put a halt to testing whilst it rebuilds... Anyone know what I could do now?

44 minutes ago, testdasi said:

A forum member just compiled custom kernel for 6.8.3 with Vega patch (and optionally with 5.5.8 kernel as well - that makes it even better than 6.9.0 beta in a sense).

Perhaps try that to see if it helps your case.

Thanks for this but I think it's a bit complicated for me... I'm pretty basic with Linux stuff and a bit nervous to give it a go...! I did actually post in that section too and he didn't think it would help with my issues
