Decent write speeds - dismal read speeds

Featured Replies

I've read the posts regarding the issue I am having, and have done everything recommended but still can not for the life of me figure out how to fix this.  I LOVE the idea and tech behind UnRAID, and everything is great except these speeds.

SYSTEM:

Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe mobo (On the list)

  2 GIG RAM

2 x Seagate ST32000542AS 2TB drives (One parity, one data)

Onboard Gigabit Ethernet, connected to Gigabit switch.

Using a 6 GIG file as the test data.

Write speed ~35 Mb/Sec.  Pretty acceptable.

Read speed ~ 15 Mb/Sec.  Will Not work at all.

RESULTS FROM IFCONFIG and ETHTOOL:

I've swapped cables, ports on the switch, rebooted, etc.  These two drives came out of the HTPC and when I moved files between them and my main PC I was getting 60 meb/sec plus all the time.  I've run HD sentinel on them and the drives are 100%.  They are about 1 month old.

What am I missing?

Just went into BIO, turned off the on-board Gigabit Ethernet and installed an Intel 10/100/1000 PRO Nic card.  Same 15 meg a sec speeds.

Interestingly, these Intel cards are ones we've used in many *nix builds with great success so I'm pretty sure it's not a network issue at this point.

I will have another suggestion that you may not like but it is easy to test since you have only 2 HDs at this point - remove them from this system and test them with an Intel or AMD (ATI) based motherboard (even externally) - just remember to set the BIOS to AHCI , boot from Flash drive and if you need you can reuse the Intel 10/100/1000 PRO Nic card.

One of my PC's writes to my unRaid at 50Mb/s and reads at 15Mb/s..... because it has a crappy gen 1 SSD and writing to the local disk on the PC is bottlenecking it.  Probably not your problem tho! :)

Note to self : Early adoption sucks!

@bcbgboy13  - I think I might have a spare mobo sitting around.  That should be an easy test.

@Chris.  While I do have an SSD in the PC, it's not the one I'm writing do.  BTW. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my SSD drive :)

Ok switched the drives over to an ASUS M2A-VM mobo with a better Brisbane AMD CPU in it.

Read speeds are actually slightly worse but reads are nearly the same.  I'm starting to thing that unRaid is not liking the new 2TB Seagate drives which doesn't make alot of sense.  I'll have to round up some other SATA II drives to try out.

This is really frustrating....

Log in on the system console and type:

hdparm -tT /dev/[hs]d?

Since you've not posted a copy of your system log, nobody can perform any analysis.  for all we know your drive might be disabled and running in emulated mode.

I'm really no sort of expert but are you sure the problem is with the unRaid server, and not the PC or whatever it is you are reading and writing to/from. Just thinking that the bottleneck might be the other end of the chain.

Upgraded the firmware on both drives to CC35 - did not help.  Same 12-15 Mb/sec READS.

Bottleneck is not in the PC I am using to test the Read/Writes.  I can Read/Write to HTPC using this machine and am getting 50-60 Mb/sec plus consistantly.

I moved the drives to the SI3114 ports on the motherboard.  SAME freaking performance.  At least it's consistant :)

I'm impressed at least how I can take the drives and the Flash drive and just plug it all in and it just works.  That's sweet.

I guess this is what I get for buying 6 of these drives for $69 each DELIVERED.  I knew it was too good to be true.

I have a few more drives laying around.  A Hitachi 2TB and several 1TB drives.  I'll swap out the drives as they are really the only common denominator in the experiment.

Thanks for all of your comments, btw.  If you have any more, please don't hesitate to reply.

Have you used different lan cables?  it sounds like you've use the same one.

I have.  The Other machine machine I plugged the drives into had it's own CAT 6 cable plugged into the switch.  Currently consolidating some data to free up a few drives. I have three drives I'm going to try to create a new unRAID array:

1 x Hitachi 1TB 3.0 Gb/s BA3010

1 x Seagate 320GB 3.0 Gb/s ST3320620AS

1 x Samsung 2TB 3.0 Gb/s HD204UI

Going to put the 2TB as the parity and add the 320 first.  Test speeds and then swap with the Hitachi after a test.

Do not use the Samsung 2TB for now - more info here - http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=9339.0

How do you prepare the drives for use - did you use the preclear, especially on the two Seagate ("These two drives came out of the HTPC and when I moved files between them and my main PC I was getting 60 meb/sec plus all the time.  I've run HD sentinel on them and the drives are 100%. They are about 1 month old.")

And BTW what Unraid version do you use - there was a new "rc" almost every other day in the last few days/weeks.

Re: The Samsung drives.  LOL.  I just can't win.  I'll use the other two for now.

I did NOT preclear the drives at command line. I added them in the UI and waited like 12 hours while they set up.  I will pre-clear the two new ones.

I am using 4.6 rc5

BTW.  I took the stock files and over wrote the files on the USB stick and it still remembered the old drives as parity and data.  I didn't FORMAT but apparently there are hidden files on the USB.  FYI.

So I log into console cd to /boot.  There is no preclear script in there.

There is no preclear on the standard install - it is an add-on item - more info here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=2817.0

It is recommended that you preclear any new disk (and wont hurt the older ones too before using them for Unraid)

FYI. You can preclear up to 6 disks at the same time and it will take at least 24-26 hours for a 2TB disk.

Since your problem is with read speeds and not write speeds, I would recommend testing without a parity drive. Reads do not access the parity drive. It will make setting things up much quicker for testing purposes.

I have a lot of 2T. Seagate drives. They work well. The problem is not there.

Got the preclear script. Thanks!

I actually did a test with no partiy drive using a 500GB drive and read times were about the same but peaked at 20 Mb/sec a few times.  This was with a drive that was two years old.

Does preclearing the drive somehow make things run better?  Seemed like a step only necessary if you didn't want the array to be offline when you added a drive.  I ran the drives through a pretty comprehensive test on a windows machine with an app called Hard Drive Sentinel.  Reads and evals the smart data and everything.

@ohlwiler - type of read speeds are you getting with those Seagate drives?

Thanks!

I ran the drives through a pretty comprehensive test on a windows machine with an app called Hard Drive Sentinel.  Reads and evals the smart data and everything.

That's all it does... It reads the smart data and puts in more humanly readable format.

It does nothing else that the preclear script does.  It does not exercise the disk or attempt to use it in a way that will uncover early physical or electrical problems.  It does not attempt to use the SMART firmware to force a re-allocation of bad sectors, it only tells you of problems AFTER they have occurred.  After you stored your data and subsequently find it unreadable.

Don't fall for the marketing and glitz.  It is not equivalent.  It serves an entirely different purpose.

For the sake of speed, I precleared a 350Gb 3Gb/s HD.  I added it to the array but did NOT add a parity drive.

Guess what?  Up and Down was about the same.  For me this was clear it was not a HD or port issue but a bottleneck somewhere else.  I opened the NIC settings on my PC and forced 1Gb Full Duplex and set the Jumbo frames to 4K.  IFCONFIG'ed the ETH0 on unRAID to MTU 4000 and read speeds jumped to 25-27 Mb/Sec!  Good enough for me!

Copied a blu ray MKV to the server and streamed it back through my Boxee HTPC.  Streams fine, even when I copy it back to the PC in explorer.  Meter reads it's using no more than 3Mb/s anyway for streamng so I'm going to assume all will be fine.

Thank you to EVERYONE who replied quickly to this post.  I'm going to "preclear" the 2TB drives I have and hope putting them back into place keeps my read/writes north of 25 Mb/s.

If all goes well, I'll have a 12TB unRAID online very soon!

Thanks again folks.

Er, I think you still have a problem. What bothers me is the streaming speed you quoted. With an uncompressed Blu Ray, you'll need (and should see) around 40Mb/sec possibly peaking at up to 50Mb/sec. That's what I get when streaming from my UnRaid box to my Dune. Just to be clear that mega bits not mega bytes. Maybe you were quoting 3 MB/sec rather than Mb which would equate to about 24Mb/sec but that's still low unless it is a heavily compressed rip. However, you say it plays fine so I'm a bit confused.

  • Author

@Yannis.  I'm streaming a compressed MKV (15 Gig file size).  My previous setup which was SAME HARDWARE RUNNING WINDOWS, streamed 60Mb/sec all day long.  Running same hardware on unRAID and it seems 25Mb/sec is topped out.

unRAID seems to be it's greatly dependent on the hardware setup combination regardless how good each component is on it's own.  I've tried unRAID out now on three different motherboards, three different NIC chipsets, 8 different physical hard drives (three manufacturers), two different switches and streaming to and from three different computers.  The current rig does not have SATA sharing PCI.

What hardware setup are you running?
