ftrees
I'm brand new to UNRAID, 10-days into a trial. I have 2 new 8TB drives, and 2 older 8TB drives from around 3 years ago currently in my array with 1 10TB parity drive. I'm getting an alert on 1 of the disks, and from search it looks like it may be a serious issue. Please see full SMART report below... I'm currently filling the arrary with data from my backup - and fixed the drive temp issue with a case mod. Need guidance please! smartctl 7.1 2019-12-30 r5022 [x86_64-linux-4.19.107-Unraid] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-19, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Model Family: Seagate Archive HDD Device Model: ST8000AS0002-1NA17Z Serial Number: Z840HT49 LU WWN Device Id: 5 000c50 0911924a8 Firmware Version: RT17 User Capacity: 8,001,563,222,016 bytes [8.00 TB] Sector Sizes: 512 bytes logical, 4096 bytes physical Rotation Rate: 5980 rpm Device is: In smartctl database [for details use: -P show] ATA Version is: ACS-2, ACS-3 T13/2161-D revision 3b SATA Version is: SATA 3.1, 6.0 Gb/s (current: 6.0 Gb/s) Local Time is: Wed Sep 23 12:31:04 2020 CDT SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability. trurl
Disk should be replaced. Diagnostics would give us a better idea of your complete situation and how to proceed. Diagnostics includes syslog, SMART for all attached disks, and many other things. Go to Tools - Diagnostics and attach the complete Diagnostics ZIP file to your NEXT post in this thread. vakilando
Hi, you wrote Quote I'm getting an alert on 1 of the disks.......it looks like it may be a serious issue What kind of alert are you getting and what kind of serious issue do you mean (the temperature?)? Your drive has 21986 Power_On_Hours = 2,5 years. Max recommended Temperature is 55°C Max Temperature Limit is 60 °C The highest temperature is 57 °C (194 Temperature_Celsius) = too hot but not max Since installing the case mod (2020-09-20 12:07?) the temp is OK and is getting less than 38°C The "Average Short/Long Term Temperatures" seem ok to me. The values for "Raw_Read_Error_Rate" and "Seek_Error_Rate" seem not critical to me. I'm NOT sure, but I can't find anything really critical. Perhaps you should post your Diagnostics log (Tools>Diagnostics) here an someone else could also take a look. Quote Link to comment

ftrees
Thanks! I've ordered a replacement drive - now I'll just need to do some reading on how to swap out the old for the new. Current Pending Sector errors mean drive will die completely soon? or just that it will not work to rebuild in this type of arrary? (drive worth using for any other use case? or is it basically trash?) Parity sync should complete in 10 hours, then I'll run full diagnostic and post Quote Link to comment

There are a few reasons for current pending, most are fatal, especially in that quantity. However, it's a remote possibility that a poor power or other environmental factors could cause them, in which case a full write and a full smart scan with those factors corrected could enable the drive to see that those sectors really are ok. So, if you are keen on saving the drive or killing it permanently, run 3 or more full preclear cycles and see how it handles it. There is a remote possibility that the drive will recover and be all ok. More likely it will just get worse. Quote Link to comment

I was hoping it would have some value for resell at the least... I guess I could list it on eBay for parts only with the smart report and let someone make that choice. I don't want to trust it in my array though Quote Link to comment
