January 27, 201115 yr There's quite a few to choose from. What other things are you looking for in a motherboard? Low power consumption? Fast CPU? Lots of RAM? Lots of PCIe ports? We need more info.
January 27, 201115 yr Author I need it to support a 15 drive build. Low power would be nice. It doesn't need a fast CPU or lots of RAM.
January 27, 201115 yr The Supermicro X7SPA-HF with a x8 SATA PCIe x4 Supermicro will get you 14 Drives
January 27, 201115 yr Author I'm considering the SUPERMICRO MBD-X8SIL-F-O http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182211&Tpk=MBD-X8SIL-F-O I would like something cheaper but this gets me to 15 drives.
January 27, 201115 yr This can get you to 30 drives - OVERKILL according to your needs. It will also cost you much more: MB $189 + CPU ~$110 = $300 + Shipping The X7SPA-HF is ~$200 + Shipping. Is that extra 1 drive (15th) that critical?

There has been some discussion about the support of the LSI controller and things might improve with v5 of unRAID.
January 27, 201115 yr Is IPMI exclusive to SuperMicro? I thought I saw an Asus mobo advertised with headless remote management but it did mention IPMI (that I noticed).
January 27, 201115 yr I've also heard about Asus boards with IPMI, but in practice I haven't seen any. I'm considering the SUPERMICRO MBD-X8SIL-F-O http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182211&Tpk=MBD-X8SIL-F-O I would like something cheaper but this gets me to 15 drives. I think that board is a great choice, and the one I was originally going to recommend anyway. I thought there was a cheaper one in the $150 range, but now I can't find one, so I guess that's the cheapest. I just built a 22 drive server for a client based on that board and an i3, and it was a completely flawless build. The only minor issue with the board is that there doesn't seem to be a way lock the flash drive down as the only boot device - anytime you add or replace a drive on one of the motherboard slots it will steal boot priority. This is easy to fix since you have IPMI at your fingertips, but still it is a minor annoyance. By the way, here's another thread on the same subject that pretty much comes to the same conclusion: Best budget board that supports IPMI In that thread you'll also find these handy tips: you can use a G6950 to save a bucks over the i3. January 27, 201115 yr Raj, I don't own an X8SIL, but did you try setting SATA to "Disabled"? This works with the C2SEE/SEA.
January 27, 201115 yr Is that under the boot settings? The client has the board now, so I can't test it with the X8SIL, but I do have a couple of C2SEEs on which I would like to change that setting. Once I know exactly where the setting is, I can ask the client to test it.
