• 6.11.1 system crash after shutting down Windows 11 VM

    MothyTim
    • Solved Urgent

I had the same problem with 6.11.0 hoped that the update would fix! Shutting down my Windows 11 VM causes major issues, I quickly lose access to my docker apps and also the main GUI so have to do hard reset! Stutting down my Chrome OS VM doesn't cause major issues that I've noticed but my monitor stays on, it's like it's not swiching off the GPU.

    Cheers,

    Tim

Not being ignored but not everyone running win11 vm has this issue, so where to look?

How are you shutting down, from within windows or via VM 'Stop' dropdown option?

There are call traces in the logs when VMs But looks like python3 caused the last one. But the system does seem to continue post.

Not being ignored but not everyone running win11 vm has this issue, so where to look?

How are you shutting down, from within windows or via VM 'Stop' dropdown option?

Hi, I usually shutdown from within the VM unless there is a problem and I need to force a shutdown.

Ok so had to run Windows 11 again yesterday and had usual problem, I'm guessing its something with networking although I can't even access comand line on the attached monitor, so had to do hard reset! I've attached diagnostics and syslog, it happened at around 3:30 - 4:00pm. I also don't seem to be able to change any settings on the Windows 11 VM, I attached my XMLs to this post:

If I can do any tests for you I'm more than happy to do so, as would like to get to the bottom of it!

    Cheers,

    Tim

Hi, Ubuntu VM is ok for me, only issue on shut down is the same as Chrome OS, it doesn't switch off the GPU so the monitor stays on! It stays on displaying: [16543.588016] reboot: Power down

It's a bit of a pain, (and waste of power!!) but not as bad as windows crashing the system. Although Windows does switch off GPU and so monitor goes to sleep!

I don't know if that points Limetech to anything?

    Cheers,

    Tim

    Hey,
I have the same problem, only with an Ubuntu LTS 22.04 VM. Unraid does not hang on every shutdown, but reproducibly on the 2 or 3 times. Have also opened a bug post about this.

    Greetings

    https://forums.unraid.net/bug-reports/stable-releases/unraid-crashes-completely-on-shutdown-of-an-ubuntu-vm-reproducible-r2168/

Does the crash happen if you only pass through the Video and not the Audio pci device, when you shutdown?

    @SimonF

Crash happens with audio and video passthrough.

I have other problems too. igpu kick off by kernel etc.

    Maybe it's a motherboard bios problem. I've a very new board Gigabyte MW34-SP0 (W680)

Just now i was vpn on a windows vm and after i did a shutdown the whole server is down. even the remote console of the board. but what i notice is that the crashes mostly have to do with virtual machines. the windows machine has no graphics card associated with it, only vnc.

hello, sorry i've the reverse problem on that post. W11 work fine with W11 and Virtual Card.. when i try to add my Video Card on passthoug system start but freeze all Unraid and the only think i can do is the Hard Reset. someone have any idea? W10 Work fine at 100%. the Video card is A quadro k4000.

Hi, it solved itself with 6.11.4!!! Couldn't tell you what it was! Sorry! It would be nice if the GPU bug got fixed too! :)

Thanks. I will wait for further release. I'm running the 6.11.5 and I have the crash bug when I shut the VM down.

I would post your diagnosics so that someone from Limetech can look and see if it's a bug that needs addressing! Don't assume they know about it! :)
