  1. what the hell is going on with Intel!? ๐Ÿ˜ฆ I have tried to buy Intel Xeon E-2288G oder 2278G online, but can't find a single cpu worldwide. Are they out of production and removed from the market or something? Ryzen on the other hand is so easy to get ...
  2. Oh lucky you for living in the USA. ๐Ÿ˜€ I wished I also could ... Just bought 4 of them because in Germany Hard Drives are way more expensive as this deal. Even exporting from the UK is way cheaper for me. Now, that I just bought that great deal I feel "terrabyte addicted" and think about buying more.
  3. @ramblinreck47 Don't know if you need more drives, but I found a pretty awesome deal. As a little thank you for all the written and really helpful information I would like to share this with you! It's on Amazon UK ๐Ÿ‘‰ WD 14 TB My Book for 200.99 ยฃ (262,32 $) Link
  4. Got it! Also very helpful for me because on the mainboard of my choice (E3C246D4U2-2L2T) I will have only 7 SATA ports. Is it possible to connect the HBA card (LSI 9211-8i) directly to the backplane of my case (it's a mini-SAS SFF-8643 36 pin connector), instead directly to the drives (SATA)? That would be great and would save me all onboard sata ports for SSDs or something else. Cable could be something like this: Mini SAS SFF-8643 to Mini SAS 36Pin SFF-8087
  5. Yes, that makes sence. ๐Ÿ˜€ Also can't imagine, why they would make these drives too loud. From consumers point of view they have to be quite silent because they will stand usualy on the desk. The new 3.3 pin standard could be indeed a problem. But I guess an acceptable and handable thing for such cheap drives. Taping would work for me, but gives me mixed feelings because I'm afraid that the tape could cause a fire or do some other damage in the server. The molex to SATA adapter wouldn't work because I will have a backplane in my case. What is a molex powered backplane? I know the old molex cables, but I guess you don't mean these. I will buy the CS381 case which uses Backplanes for the Hot-swapable drive bays. In the Manual it is said that it will be powered with two 6 pin cables (one each bay) that goes over 8 pin to the power supply. In the manual it is also said that the backplane has circuitry to convert +12V power down to +5V (Screenshot attached). What ever this means ... Is that what you mean by Molex powerd? That would be great, because then I could also just plug and play the drives ๐Ÿ˜Œ.
  6. Sir, you are awesome! Again, thank you so much. Still Noob but your Infos are very helpful! Shucking seems to be super awesome! ๐Ÿ˜€ Do I have to pay attention to something before buying? Are the bigger drives louder? On Reddit someone said the 14 TB Version of the WD Digital My Book would be very loud. However, I would tend towards larger drives.
  7. Thank you so much for that build list and all these detailed informations! It seems that this will be a very powerful server! ๐Ÿ˜€ Looking forward to see the finished Server and how it performs. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Because I'm an absolute Noob, I would like to ask some more things: What hard drives will you use for that server? Any recommendations so far? I would prefer less noisy hard drives. "SSD only" doesn't work with unraid, right? Is unraid slow? At the moment I'm using a Synology (DS415 Play - dual core and only 1 GB RAM ) with WD Red Hard Drive and that is super super slow ... I'm a little affraid that unraid also based on hard drives could also be slow. Of course I will uses the M.2 SSD as a Cache Drive, but are the reads and wrights on the HDDs not too slow for an fast server? I have really mixed feelings because of my slow Synology ... What is the thing about the HBA Card? I mean, Unraid already does have its Parity for redundancy, so whats the point of additional Raid configuration? Is it for more speed? Raid 0 or something? How many cards do you need for lets say 8 HDDs?
  8. any signs that Linux kernel 4.20 is coming soon? Or when?
  9. So the point with the possible kernel dedendency is very interessting and important for our further purchase I guess. Thank you for that information! A verification about that would be indeed very helpful for all who want to buy a 9th Gen Intel CPU.
  10. wow, thank you so much for that detailed and super helpful reply. ๐Ÿ‘ That really helps me in my decision. QuickSync is now the crucial factor for choosing one of the Intel 8 Cores (E-2278G or even E-2288G). My build so far: MB: Asrock E3C246D4U2-2L2T (or E3C242D4U2-2T) CPU: Intel Xeon E-2288G RAM: 16x2 GB DDR4 2666 ECC M.2 SSD : 1 TB Evo Plus Case: SilverStone CS381 PSU: Corsair SF450 Platinum Cooler: Noctua NH-L9i But I'm not sure which HDDs to choose. Western Digital Red oder Seagate Ironwolf. Because the server will be in the living room I will probably prefer less noisy drives. Any recommendations or are they pretty simmular? I would also be very glad to see your build list ๐Ÿ˜Š
  11. Hey! I am not sure what configuration to choose for my upcoming Unraid/Plex Server, so I would be very thankful about your thougts. My options so far: AMD Ryzen 7 3700x on the Motherboard X470D4U2-2T Transcodes from GPU Quadro P2000 (since the Ryzen doesn't have processor graphics) Intel E-2278G on the Motherboard E3C246D4U2-2L2T Transcodes from iGPU (processor graphics) Since I want to have the power consumption as low as possible I am really uncertain what to choose now. The Ryzen hase 65 TDP, the Intel 80, but I have no idea how much power consumption the P2000 will finaly have. It's said to have 75 W. So will I have 140 TDP all the time? Really don't know ... I need the graphic unit only for plex and only when transcodes are requested. On the other hand I'm not sure if the Intel's graphic unit is strong enough ... I guess I won't have more thean two 4K transcodes at a time. I would appreciate your advice!
