  1. Hi all, i'm trying the latest version of unraid inside vmware workstation on my windows 10 laptop with the posted vmdk and an usb-stick with passthrough. All is fine except unraid that is not finding any network card. Any chance to force the driver for vmware workstation nic inside unraid ?
  2. Are those 5in3 noisy? I'm coming from a fractal case that is virtually mute and i hate the noise Removing that metal manually without a dremel is doable? Any chance to find em in europe? Inviato dal mio iPad utilizzando Tapatalk
  3. What do you mean ? I have now my disks with connectors facing the back of the case like this photo : http://s1039.photobucket.com/user/justice9999/media/P1000317.jpg.html
  4. Just sent a message through their support page Thanks By the way, how is the node 304 regarding to hdd temps ? It's so little eheh
  5. Guys a little advice : i'm currently returning to unraid, buying a mix of new and used stuff to build a system.I have 2 seagate 8tb archive to use too (with 1 6tb wd red and 2 wd green 2tb drives). I love Fractal cases but in my current Define R3 hdd slots lack the hole to secure these archive disks and i hate this. For what i can see even the new Fractal Define R5 has the same problem. What can you suggest me to buy with lots of 3,5 or 5,25 slots ? I have seen the Sharkoon T9, but from the reviews on youtube i can see the same "problem" with hdd slots. Something that can be bought in europe please Thanks
  6. Good to know So i should install windows on my ssd...and boot everything from a usb stick.Do you think i do not need a cache drive for unraid installing my software on windows like plex ?
  7. Hey all, i'm moving soon to my new apartment (bought, so i'm damn poor right now) and i'm rethinking my nas/pc re-using my parts. At the moment i'm using a windows 10 configuration with flexraid for pooling and parity but i really miss the online parity calculation of unraid, the hdd spindown (with windows + flexraid i cannot spin down anything) and this community I already own an unraid pro license. The point is that i need windows 10 for my gaming needs (and at the moment i cannot buy another box for sure) so i'm thinking about using unraid + virtual windows 10 with gpu passthrough for my gaming, plex and emby servers (i like having them on windows) What i own : - Intel i7 4790 (so vt-d enabled) with HD Graphics 4600 - 32 gb ram - Asrock z87 extreme 6 (http://www.asrock.com/mb/intel/z87%20extreme6/) with 10 esata + dual intel nic - Nvidia GTX 960 2gb ram - bluray reader/writer - 2x Seagate archive 8tb - 3x Seagate green 2tb - 1x Crucial MX100 256gb SSD - Fractal R3 Case with added silent fans I own a single monitor (a dell 24" U2410 1920x1200). Can i install unraid and leave it headless using the dispay only for windows (i want my windows up 7x24, i prefer to use it for my downloads and other stuff too for example)? Or even better the igpu for unraid and the nvidia one for windows ? I will need to pass all my usb ports to windows after the initial setup too. Something else to consider ? Any problems i do not see ? Thanks a lot !
  8. DAMN, reading the wiki i now noticed this : USB hot plugging is not currently supported, so devices must be attached before the VM is started in order for USB pass through to function So have i to shutdown the vm EVERY time i need to plugin a simple 2,5 externat usb drive or thumb ? :'(
  9. The easiest way you wrote should be perfect for me. I really do not want the parity drive always active so i need the disk outside of the array I need a sh*tload of backups before doing that, my actual windows 10 rig is on that ssd
  10. To be honest i'm still in the process of building the rig I read the wiki, the only thing i'm still wondering is : how can i passthrough 1 of my disks outside of unraid array to the windows vm ? Problem is that i want windows 10 os on a ssd but i need a secondary disk for my downloads (i know i can do those with dockers but with a windows vm always on it's much easier and fast for me). So i think my options are : 1 - pass a ssd as windows main os disk with something like unassigned devices plugin and use a 2tb hard disk configured as unraid cache for storing downloads (of course i do not want parity calculations on downloads) 2 - use the ssd as unraid cache, place the windows os virtual-disk on it and pass the 2tb with unassigned devices plugin to it. What do you think will work best ? Any other option available ?
  11. Greattttttt, i'm already subscribed to your youtube channel! Looking forward to it! Please be very detailed about gpu and usb devices passthrough Thanks a lot
  12. Hi all ! My i7 4790 and new motherboard are finally here, and i want to try out installing unraid + windows 10 vm with gpu passthrough. For what i can read there isn't a tutorial/guide for such a thing around, but bits of information here and there. Can someone (maybe Jon?) write a detailed guide on how to procede ? Personally i'm thinking to start his way (tell me if i'm doing something wrong please) : 1 - boot unraid from usb 2 - configure it with my laptop (my main monitor is connected to the rig so i cannot use it for now without passthrough) 2 - start my array and change my cache to a ssd drive (btw how to copy dockers from old drive to the new one ?) 3 - setup bridge networking and enable vm 4 - setup a new share for ISOs cache only 5 - setup a new share vdisks cache only how to procede from here ? i need to install windows 10 using gpu and usb passthrough
  13. Looking around for the motherboard....i found this one that can be good for me : Asrock Z97 Extreme 4 http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z97%20Extreme4/?cat=Specifications 3x pcie 16x slots (i need one for my 4x AOC-SASLP-MV8 right ? i cannot find a motherboard with a 4x slot and 2 pcie 16x damn!) intel gigabit lan 8 sata fair price What do you think ?
  14. Right, thanks! Today i will search for a good motherboard (i usually prefer Asrock) Can you see other problems ?
  15. Ok, so here is my updated plan, i badly need an advice on what can go wrong before spending the $$$ please Here in Italy the ivy bridge i7 3770 is going to cost like the haswell one (4790), around 300 euro so : - buy Haswell i7 4790 - buy a new 1150 motherboard with 6 sata - use my 32 gb ddr3 ram - use my AOC-SASLP-MV8 for expansions - install unraid 6.1 - use my disks for data storage array on unraid with parity - use a 256gb ssd as unraid cache for dockers and vm ONLY - passthrough my nvidia gtx 770 to a windows 10 vm with 16 gb ram, always connected to my dell 24 inch monitor for general use, always on (like now).Passthrough my mouse, keyboard, integrated sound card and bluray drive to this. - buy an nvidia 720 or amd 5450 to passthrough to an openelec vm (same ssd as the windows 10 one) connected to my lcd tv (video and audio). Passthrough of my usb IR receiver to control this via my logitech harmony remote What can go wrong with my setup ? any advice ? Thanks a lot
  16. Personally with a Samsung lcd 55 inch tv seen 3 m away i cannot see the difference between a full bluray backup and a 10-12 gb mkv compressed one. So, if you have like 50 bluray that is not a problem and i can suggest you keep the bluray as it is with makemkv. But if you are like me with 500 movies and hundreds of tv-series, i say compress everything to x264 with crf 19-20 slow/slowest quality and you are set. I like to keep my tv-series in 720p (except my favourite ones like Band of Brothers or The Pacific) but they are taking too much space anyway. I'm now experimenting with HEVC encoding and for example a 2 gb tv-series episode in 720p quality is compressed to like 750 mb. Not a big saving with a few series but a couple of big hard drive if you have a lot. The same with movies : you can compress a 12-15 gb h264 movie with near same quality in 5-6 gb. Problem with HEVC is the playback...after a few tests i can tell you that plex server on my gaming rig (i5 3570k) is able to transcode a 1080p hevc movie to my ipad with cpu between 25%-95%, so you need a capable server.
  17. Gary, compress a bluray to 4.7 gb is going to look like s**t on a big TV screen compared to a 10 gb one in terms of details. Use hevc codec to go so down in size
  18. After some thoughts, i'm leaning towards a rebuild of my gaming rig as an unraid server. I need to swap the motherboard+cpu with Haswell ones to re-use my 32gb of ddr3 ram..planning a windows 10 vm passthrough with my nvidia 770. Do you think there will be problems ? What 1150 motherboard with 8 sata ports can you suggest me ? Will 1 NIC sharing between my windows10 and unraid give me problems ?
  19. Long story (not so) short : i'm already thinking of changing my current unraid (hp microserver n40l) because it's really too noisy in my opinion (it's placed next to me,already changed psu fan with a noctua and still too noisy for my tastes) and i'm beginning to transcode to my ipad for my daughter and that cpu is really limited ofr the job. My main gaming rig is a Fractal R3 with a Seasonic x660 PSU and an intel I5 3570k, and it's virtually mute, it's really really hard to hear it. Sadly the cpu does not support iommu and it's power hungry so i'm thinking to not reusing it. So, my plan is to build a new unraid with a bunch of seagate 8tb (already own 2),1 cache drive (a WD green 2tb already own) with a few dockers (plex, tonido, jdownloader and maybe something else) and i hope a few virtual machines with full passthrough, as low power and cheap as possible. I still do not know if i want to replace my gaming rig with it too (i really only play with my xbox one but sometimes i play some Eve Online or Heartstone, low gpu requirement games anyway, so maybe i can do it...) My plan (i live in Europe): - case Fractal R5 - bequiet or seasonic 600w psu - haswell cheap motherboard with at least 6 sata ports (to reuse 16 gb DDR3 1600mhz ram i already own, sadly i read that skylake is not supporting DDR3) - haswell cpu, maybe E3 1220v3 or an i5 (are those capable of hevc 1080p transcoding ? I hope cause i wanna encode in x265 soon using my work computers eheh) - in case of windows 10 gaming rig usage... i already own a nvidia 770, is it ok for full passthrough ? Any considerations or suggestions ? Thanks a lot
  20. Just installed jdownloader and ctrl+alt+shift copy/paste is working great ! Thanks a lot
  21. Ok, i'm screwed I will "simply" update everything as stated keeping xbmc box separate then. Is VT-X enough for a "simple" vm like the archlinux one posted on forums right ? Thanks a lot
  22. Hi all, after over a year of really good service it's time to update my unraid server, i have no space left. I'm running now unraid 5.0 with 7 drives (6 data + 1 parity),a pentium g620 cpu and 8gb ram. I'm using it to serve my xbmc media (movies,tv series, family photos and planning to add music) and for the occasional backup. These are my plans : - buy the upgrade unraid license - add a couple of 3 tb hd - add a 64gb ssd as a cache drive (i found one from a friend) - upgrade to unraid 6.0 latest beta with xen - start using some vm like archlinux with plex, air video etc etc And now some questions : 1 - Is the latest beta stable like unraid 5 betas ? They were rock-solid for me. 2 - Can i save my virtual machines on the cache drive to let all my drives spin down ? 3 - Can i use windows as a virtual machine with xbmc installed with the integrated intel gpu ? I have also a spare nvidia 210 fanless gpu just in case. This way i can move my actual xbmc player ( an amd e-350 little box with openelec) in my bedroom for example without further expenses. EDIT : i'm seeing from this intel page that my cpu supports VT-x but NOT VT-d...am i screwed ? http://ark.intel.com/products/53480/Intel-Pentium-Processor-G620-3M-Cache-2_60-GHz
